Female Goosander with 8 young next to the monkey bridge below the canal on the Irwell. I'm sure it's the same family party I saw on Bank Holiday Monday when there was 10 young adjacent Bury Sewage Works and again yesterday below Warth Bridge. Just how they have negotiated the steep waterfall with the river in flood is anybody's guess.

Correction on the Bar-tailed godwit this morning think that all 3 were Summer plumage - one bird was bigger than the 2 red birds so think this may have been a summer plumage female and 2 summer plumage male's.

A great walk along the pump house side and down to withins this afternoon.
Species seen:
The 2 highlights were:
3 female Wheatear,
1 Whinchat,
Others included:
Chiffchaff,
Willow warbler,
Grey wagtail,
Skylark,
Common tern,
Reed bunting,
Lots of sand martins,
Plus lots of the usual species.
I had my wife and daughter with me and was hoping to see the little owl. No luck. Could any one point out to me where the usual spot is to see it please. Thanks.

Best birds appeared within 10 mins of each other
Male Whinchat on the fence line by old hall farm, got to the pump house and Ian C and Ian P were watching 3 Godwits circling the res, which turned out to be Bar-tailed Godwits. (2 Summer Plumage & 1 winter plumage) and while watching these a Yellow wagtail flew over.

Missed all the fun with the Hobby(Ba******) I think this comment was predicted but having caught up with Ian and Steven we did have good views of a Buzzard perched in hedgerow below Withins, also Little Owl and Grasshopper warbler reeling in Old hall Marsh again. 7-9.30 this a.m. at res 2 Common Sandpiper, 3 little Ringed Plover, 1 Goldeneye and 1 Kingfisher. On capsticks field 2 female Wheatear with a single amongst the highland cattle. Little Owl usual spot. On Old Hall Marsh many Reed Bunting 2 reeling Grasshopper Warbler, 4 singing Sedge Warbler with another at Corran Stud. This evening, 2 summer plumaged Dunlin and a Little Ringed Plover we're with the 2 Common Sandpipers.
Yesterday (21st), I counted 18 singing Willow Warblers around the whole site, also Reed Warbler and Sedge Warbler singing in the Dip and 5 Blackcaps around Buckingham Drive area.

good mooch around today 9.30-3pm, 46 species seen.
no signs of any common terns, but 1 arctic tern on the res from around 11am still showing at 1pm, nice to meet pete baron again & simon Johnson. 4 little ringed plovers 2 oystercatchers lesser whitethroat, heard only at corran stud. hundreds of sand martins several swallows & house martins 38 tufted ducks on withins 5 linnets 1 meadow pipit 2 reed buntings 2 skylarks 1 kestrel 1 little owl 13 willow warblers 8 blackcaps 3 chiffchaffs 1 grey wagtail 4 pied wagtails mistle thrush with 2 fledged juveniles plus all usuals around.

First visit here today between about 830 and 1130, really liked it.
Birds seen: 5 Little Ringed Plover 1 Common Sandpiper 100+ Sand Martin 20+ Swallow 2-3 House Martin in the melee 2 Great Crested Grebe doing the courtship display and dishing up weeds (first time I've seen this, lovely moment) 2 pairs of Reed Bunting at least 4-5 Lapwing swooping about calling 3-4 Skylarks by Old Hall Farm singing their hearts out in the blue sky Numerous Willow Warblers, Chiffchaff, didn't see Blackcap though
Cracking views of a weasel too, by Withins Reservoir
No sign of Redstart or Little Owl or Sedge Warbler or Grasshopper Warbler, but I need to get better at this! I'll be back...

This a.m. with Ian P and Simon(sorry forgot Surname), on res single Goldeneye, Gadwall, Common Tern and 2 Little Ringed Plover and 2 Oystercatcher. At Capstics singing Sedge Warbler, reeling Grasshopper warbler seen well, below Withins. Little Owl. 2 Wheatear in field in front of Old Hall Farm with a linnet also and another flyover Little Ringed Plover. Unlike the last 2 days which were nice and we had only small numbers of Sand Martin over the res today in poor weather there were 100's. Cheers Ian
