At lunchtime today, a male Pheasant visited the garden. Unfortunately I was at work so did not see it, but it was seen by at least three people. I haven't a clue where it came from, but it is a quite remarkable record for the urban area I live in and a first record for the garden.

Marple. My observations are more absences rather than sightings. Two weeks ago I had my worst ever weekly total with only 8 species visiting the garden and last week was only one better. Dunnocks and collared doves used to be almost daily visitors but since the heatwave in July I've only seen them on two occasions each and in the last five weeks I've only seen one blackbird. Am I unlucky or have others seen a similar, worrying decline? Coal tit, sparrow, nuthatch and magpie are now the most frequent visitors.

Bury . Yesterday 0930hrs., I was standing in the garden , near a rhododendron bush . Suddenly , a tawny owl appeared from the left , swooped down and passed , very closely , between me and the bush , a distance of five feet , at knee height and swerved into the tall laurels . There was no obvious reason for him to have been flushed . Amazing and exciting .
