Rindle and Croxden's this morning.
Jackdaw circa 500 very mobile and noisy wheeling around the fields around Rindle cottages. Nothing very unusual about seeing a jackdaw, but in such large numbers they are pretty impressive, active and really noisy!
Rindle Track and Hedge: Grain feed for pheasants is attracting quite big flocks of finches and buntings on the track between the hedges - beyond where the former feeding station was. Chaffinch circa 50 highly mobile. Brambling 1m 1f Reed Bunting circa 30 Yellowhammer circa 20 No Tree Sparrows seen today Dunnock 4 Robin 4
Croxden's Common Buzzard just the 1 Reed Bunting 2 Wren 2 Common Snipe 6 This was in and around the old hand-cut peat workings. Pretty bleak and drab in the low light today!

13.30 to 15.30 in variable light - sometimes it was golden and sparkling, sometimes almost dark!
Rindle Road, Hedge, Wood, and Astley Moss SSSI
Chaffinch - seemed to be everywhere. Possibly about 150. Very hard to ID Brambling against the light so none conclusively seen. Yellowhammer - Mostly with Chaffinch at Rindle Hedge - around 30 Reed Bunting - with crowds of Chaffinch along SSSI path - 30 Tree Sparrow (Rindle Hedge) 2 Dunnock 2 Wren 3 Robins Jay 2 Long Tailed Tit 6 Mistle Thrush 3 Woodpigeon - large flocks feeding in the fields
Pink-footed Goose - c. 40 feeding in field nearest to SSSI pools. They were flushed by a jogger who was running along and down the boundary of each field - pity but after they had taken off and flew calling to the NW, a few minutes later they returned over the moss, appearing to have been joined by another 60 making a skein of 100 at lowish level. Then flew south across the railway, but about 30 minutes later emerged back over the railway flying towards me on Rindle Road, but took a right wheel to the east and disappeared in the general direction of Worsley.
I got pretty excited seeing the group feeding - definitely a site first for me.
Moss Lane in poor light late-on:
Stubble fields Mixed flock of Fieldfare, Mistle thrush and Starling totalling approx 200. Pied Wagtail - 4 Kestrel - 2
Big Jackdaw flock probably around 500 over the farms, 300 seen earlier east of Rindle Road might have been absorbed into the total.
Really felt like there was a LOT going on today!
PS. Nothing against the jogger who I'm guessing was a local. He wasn't on the SSSI. It was just a shame he appeared seconds after I had spotted the geese!

Rindle Road also had plenty of finches with good numbers of Yellowhammers,Chaffinches and again a few Bramblings and Reed Buntings feeding on the grain put down by the pheasant shooters along the track to the old carrot field. 9 Snipe flushed off Astley Moss SSSI were the only birds seen there apart from 3 Buzzards over.

Great to meet you Steve!
I walked over to Little Woolden Moss via Astley Road. I always like walking up there, there are tons of garden birds around the houses, where numerous folk have feeders up, and then at Field 41 there is normally something to look at. Today there were 2 perched Buzzards showing well, but the highlight was a clamorous flock of assorted passerines. Initially a flock of 15 or so Redwings showed well bursting off the ground into a tree, and then it was obvious that there were dozens of finches and buntings about too. There were at least 10 Yellowhammer in with Greenfinch, Linnet, Goldfinch and Chaffinch. The noise was fantastic! Also one male Bullfinch flew over and on the way back I picked up a Siskin too.
At Field 25 there were dozens more Chaffinch and another 10 or so Yellowhammer. You can stand by the road and watch them buzz around to your heart's content. Across the motorway around Woodstock and Larkhill Farms were several Mistle Thrush and a female Bullfinch.
When I got to the reserve the sun was out and it was really stunning. What a credit to the Lancashire Wildlife Trust team. I spent a few minutes looking for small birds in the trees and found 3 Reed bunting and a Willow Tit, which was brilliant. Then I picked up a Short-eared Owl perched on a dead tree in the middle of the long grass where Elspeth described. This was at about 11.30. I watched it preening and occasionally looking around, including a couple of times when big birds passed close by. At one point a large Sparrowhawk glided past a few feet off the ground and the owl just watched it cruise by. A far cry from one mobbing a Marsh Harrier at Lunt a few weeks back. The bird looked really dark, and I had almost thought it was a buzzard, but the apparent tail was actually the folded primaries. I was happy to have spotted it at the distance.
At 13.43 (!) the bird started hunting and I had a spellbinding 20 minutes to myself watching it work the moss. Steve turned up at exactly the right time to avoid a 2 hour wait for some nice flight views! In flight the dark upper wings were very evident. What a stunner!
So all in all a really great day's birding, especially as the BBC had led me to believe it would persist with rain at 2pm, whereas it was actually fine until it got dark.

Made a change this morning to get out to Moss Lane, Rindle Road and Astley Moss south of the A580 and actually get some watery sunshine! There was load of bird activity - quite a rewarding morning. The flocks were very hard to count properly but it was something like this: 70 Fieldfare, 15 Redwing, 70 Chaffinch with a single Brambling identified near the edge of Rindle wood, 5 Mistle Thrush, 20 Mallard, 4 Jays, circa 500 Jackdaws in a massive flock, 3 Greenfinch near the old feeding station, 35 Long Tailed Tit, 20 Yellowhammer, 1 Willow Tit, 3 Tree Sparrow, 6 Reed Bunting, 6 Common Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 2 Collared Dove and a Goldcrest. (Plenty of pheasant and a veritable plague of woodpigeon but no partridge in or out of a pear tree!) And just the ONE photo!! I was pleased with the Brambling in fact because it's the first I've ever identified in "open country" as it were, and not on feeders etc. Only the one but it's a start!!

Hi folks,
We have had a pair of Short-eared Owl hunting over the LWT Cadishead Moss reserve regularly in the last week. They were not spotted yesterday when I was onsite with volunteers, but were seen at least once each day from Thursday to Sunday, with frequent prolongued views, so we're hopeful they might stick around. Each time the birds were easily viewed from the Little Woolden Moss public footpath. I have also heard reports of up to 3 Short-eared Owls near to Astley Moss over the last few weeks (although may be same birds).
Have some (very poor!) photos up on our Chat Moss Project facebook page, and also there is a report from Dave Steel's bird walk onSaturday, including an encounter with the owls.
cheers,
Elspeth

The Redwings are back on their favourite haunt,18 feeding on the elder and hawthorn berries on the tract between F8/F9.
Nice to see good numbers of Snipe again on Croxden PNR with 10 flushed.
102 Lapwings on F49 with 5 Buzzards soaring over and 3 Kestrels across F8/F45/F11.
Jackdaw circa 500 very mobile and noisy wheeling around the fields around Rindle cottages. Nothing very unusual about seeing a jackdaw, but in such large numbers they are pretty impressive, active and really noisy!
Rindle Track and Hedge:
Grain feed for pheasants is attracting quite big flocks of finches and buntings on the track between the hedges - beyond where the former feeding station was.
Chaffinch circa 50 highly mobile.

Pink-footed Goose - c. 40 feeding in field nearest to SSSI pools. They were flushed by a jogger
who was running along and down the boundary of each field - pity but after they had taken off and flew calling to the NW, a few minutes later they returned over the moss, appearing to have been joined by another 60 making a skein of 100 at lowish level.

Mixed flock of Fieldfare, Mistle thrush and Starling totalling approx 200.
Pied Wagtail - 4
Kestrel - 2
Big Jackdaw flock probably around 500 over the farms, 300 seen earlier east of Rindle Road might have been absorbed into the total.
Really felt like there was a LOT going on today!
PS. Nothing against the jogger who I'm guessing was a local. He wasn't on the SSSI. It was just a shame he appeared seconds after I had spotted the geese!

Walk from Barton Moss - along Twelve Yards Road - to Little Woolden Moss - and return.

- Linnet ~ 30-40
- Brambling 5 all male
- also 3 Mistle Thrush and a male Blackbird travelling with them
Other birds...
- Common Buzzard 3 in the air together

Large Chaffinch flock c200-250 in amongst 2 male Brambling, 2 Yellowhammer and a goldfinch very flighty dropping into field 67 and back into the Birch and Hawthorn trees that border Rindle road
Big mixed flock, feeding on stubble but quite nervous:
~ 200 Chaffinch
3-5 Brambling, mostly male, 1 female
~ 20 Yellowhammers, mostly males, chasing
possibly 1 Tree Sparrow
10 Greenfinch
2 Bullfinch (m,f)
Also
100's of Wood Pigeon
~80 Mallard by road
Many Jackdaw
1 Great Spotted Woodpecker (h)
70 Fieldfare, 15 Redwing, 70 Chaffinch with a single Brambling identified near the edge of Rindle wood, 5 Mistle Thrush, 20 Mallard, 4 Jays, circa 500 Jackdaws in a massive flock, 3 Greenfinch near the old feeding station, 35 Long Tailed Tit, 20 Yellowhammer, 1 Willow Tit, 3 Tree Sparrow, 6 Reed Bunting, 6 Common Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 2 Collared Dove and a Goldcrest.
Have some (very poor!) photos up on our Chat Moss Project facebook page, and also there is a report from Dave Steel's bird walk onSaturday, including an encounter with the owls.
cheers,
Elspeth
