Its a shame that you are so quick to decry MapMate as not modern or indeed that it doesn't work Paul, considering it is successfully used by thousands of wildlife recorders across the UK, the RSPB and over 20 birders in GM currently (and increasing). Whilst you personally had problems with it almost everybody else has not; so to say that it doesn't work is untrue.
Some things take a little work to get right and 'they' have worked extremely hard over the past few years to bring more recording options to the birders of Greater Manchester than pretty much any other county in the UK, including in partnership with GMEU, the on-line RODIS system which also has its own mobile app for 'in the field' use. Maybe the GMBRG's offerings can't quite match BirdTrack and how could they with their extremely limited budget, infinitely smaller personnel and know how, but they try their best and more importantly use the records they receive to the best use they can for the county and the sites within it.

In the drizzling rain this morning...
1 sand martin 1 long-tailed duck Gadwall, tufted duck, goldeneye 2 oystercatcher 1 little owl 45 lapwing 1 kestrel 2-3 sparrowhawk, 1 female eating a pigeon along the canal & later another, or possibly the same female flew over old hall marsh, as it did what I first thought was a common snipe that flew out of the marsh turned out to be a jack snipe as it flew past me & dropped back into the marsh. Plus the usuals around.

Amazing sight this a.m. with Ian Peters, approx 9.45 over 1,000 large Gulls appeared from the South, many flew on but over 500 came down on the res. Mainly Herring with Great and Lesser-black Backed with some Common also. Whilst scanning through we picked up an Iceland Gull in flight, at the same moment I got a text from Steve H who had just arrived telling us that he had just seen it on the surface of the water. . Most of the Gulls (including Iceland) then left in the direction of Pilsworth tip. Also present 5 Goldeneye, 4 Gadwall and 1 Wigeon. Elton year list now 80. Cheers Ian

This a.m. with Steve H and Ian P, very little to report, just 4 Gadwall, 2 Goldeneye and 18 Lapwing. Then at around 9.50 some large Gulls flew in, Steve was looking through them when he picked out an excellent candidate for Yellow-legged Gull amongst adult Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls. We had good scope views and Steve took some photographs but after 10 minutes it took off in the direction of Heaton Park. We will have to see what the rarity committee make of it. Cheers Ian Forgot to mention after the Yellow-legged legged it a Raven flew over and as me and Steve left a Stock Dove also flew above us.
