Folks for info on Barlow Tip see the Site Guides on the Home Page of this website, under M, Mersey Valley, there are maps you can print off. Barlow Tip is on the Chorlton WP map (as is Kenworthy). Woodcock favour the woodland thickets as well as rushes, which are preferred by the Snipes. They can occur literally anywhere in the Mersey Valley (and elsewhere) with this habitat, particularly after a foggy night in late autumn/winter.

I need Woodcock and Jack Snipe. Would love to pick these up on my local patch. Can you let me know exactly where you usually see them. That'd be really helpful.
26 Pochard, inc. 2 females in the unfrozen area around the island at the west end of the lake.
One of the Mute Swan juveniles has coiled up fishing line round its lower bill. I did report this to someone at the CWP office several days ago but nothing seems to have been done so far.

Chorlton water park was a patch of mine in the late 80s, I recall Linnets been seen on Kenworthy fields and around the piggeries on Fairy Lane, both of these come under the recording area of Chorlton Water Park!
I used to do a walk around including these two sites and the tip, very fond memories of Barlow tip, used to be really good for birds, funny thing is when you say I remember this when it was all rubbish, people think your odd
.
How sites change !

Very unusual to see Linnet around the water park and Barlow Tip. Several Lesser Redpoll and a small group of Siskins in addition to the resident Goldfinch are around at the moment. Are you sure it couldn't be a mistaken ID eg. an aberrant male Lesser Redpoll. The generally abysmal winter light doesn't help. Occasionally in the past there's been the odd Mealy Redpoll around as well. Despite living next to the park for the past 20 years and spending 2 hrs per day walking around the area I've yet to see a Linnet. Given their general decline they'd certainly be a welcome addition. Thanks for posting definitely one to keep an eye out for.

A male and female goosander on the river just before you get to the water park entrance
At the water park itself: c25 goldfinch feeding amongst treetops (no other species with them, so far as I could tell) 1 goldcrest 1 grey wagtail 1 wren 150+ black-headed gulls c30 gadwall 2 great crested grebe 5 tufted duck 5 pochard 3 cormorants 30+ coot 10+ moorhen 30+ canada geese 9 mute swan large flock of jackdaw heard on the golf course, settling in to roost 1 ring-necked parakeet flying over
Hung around Barlow tip until it got dark hoping to see a woodcock, but no joy, sadly. Heard plenty of wren, bullfinch, blackbirds and robins, and saw a small group of what I *think* were reed buntings flying over, but it has to be stated that my skills of identifying small passerines in flight leave something to be desired!

The mallards were shot with the crossbow bolts, in the spring of last year, Two of the males have managed to survive with the bolts, they fly between Cholton water park Sale water park, and the Bridgewater canal. several attempts of the whole of summer/Autumn last year were unsuccessful, they fly off the minute you get close. the fact they have survived is a blessing.

Well I have let the RSPCA know about them but they already knew I first saw them there on the 28th of November. The wardens at the water park are keeping a close eye on them but when ever they try to catch them they fly off or swim away however one of the wardens told me that 2 of them had surgery to remove the bolts but still have damaged wings. They are doing fine with no infection and are still feeding well. It's horrible to think there are people out there who get a kick out of hurting animals.

Used to be my local patch for years but that was before Ring-necked Parakeets moved in, I hope to return for a visit soon to show them to a friend for who they will be a lifer and seeing this species here will be pretty special. Funnily enough I also used to live overlooking Alexander Park, Whalley Range and when I moved away from there Ring-necked Parakeets started nesting there, not heard much about them at that site recently though. Martin,
The Parakeet have been around Chorlton golf club regularly for at least a year, I think that they may have become more obvious after the good breeding season they seem to have enjoyed this year. They don't seem to hang around the water park in any numbers but do pass over head. I've seen them at Hardy farm which isn't far as the parakeet flies.

3 Goosander on the River
2 Kingfisher - River
3 Grey Wagtails
Buzzard - UMIST sports pitches
2 Tawny Owls just before dawn
60 Pink Foots heading SE.
circa 300 Starlings and 18 Collared Doves on pylons
Fox and a single Rat by the Piggeries
Nice bit of Bryony at top of Fairy Lane
The Parakeet have been around Chorlton golf club regularly for at least a year, I think that they may have become more obvious after the good breeding season they seem to have enjoyed this year.
They don't seem to hang around the water park in any numbers but do pass over head. I've seen them at Hardy farm which isn't far as the parakeet flies.
Try typing in 'Ring-necked Parakeets' into the search facility which will bring up the relevant threads.
