At 8.20am I saw 8 Grey Herons flying up from Bradshaw Lodges. A few flew over Jumbles Reservoir which I presumed to be heading for Entwistle. However, they headed back after about 15 minutes. Later on at Entwistle I only saw about a dozen birds in the heronry. Many years ago they nested in this area so in the next few days I will be checking this out.
A "normal" Cormorant was at the sailing club on my morning visit. Early afternoon it had been replaced by a "white-headed" one.

Late morning amongst the many people and dogs. The sound of Eagley Band playing around the housing estates drifted across the reservoir, much better than the sound of barking dogs. Had a few pints with mates from the band later. The birds were the only quiet things !

Not much on a morning walk, only a Grey Heron, the tame Canada Goose, Mallards, a Moorhen, and a few Black-headed Gulls, until I got towards the top end of the reservoir. Here I kept seeing ripples and bubbles from a small diving bird amongst the trees by the footpath. It took me nearly half an hour to get a brief view and confirm it was a Little Grebe. My first one here for years.
I passed through again in the afternoon, adding a pair of Goosanders to the morning list. Black-headed Gulls had increased to 80+ with a couple of Common Gulls.
I was told there was a flock of thrushes in the field between Grange Road and the railway. A venture into the field revealed 30+ Redwings.

9.15am to 9am & 11.30am to noon. Very windy which meant hardly any woodland birds were heard or seen. A calling Sparrowhawk was the only bird worth noting. Not much on the reservoir either. 1 Cormorant 1 Canada Goose 40+ Mallards 5 Moorhens 20+ Black-headed Gulls
Passing Herring Gulls were worth counting though. I saw my first ones as I walked along Grange Road, a flock of seven, which was already unusual for here. Along the reservoir lots more passed, giving me a total of 65. One large flock contained over 50% of this total. Whilst on Wayoh I saw another eight following the same route heading south towards Jumbles, and another three passed during my later visit.

Woodland birds included 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers (one by the yatch club & one along Grange Road), 1 Nuthatch at Lees Cottages, and a few Greenfinches, Siskins, and Bullfinches. One Mistle Thrush heard from up the access road.
1 Cormorant
1 Canada Goose
40+ Mallards
5 Moorhens
20+ Black-headed Gulls
Passing Herring Gulls were worth counting though. I saw my first ones as I walked along Grange Road, a flock of seven, which was already unusual for here. Along the reservoir lots more passed, giving me a total of 65. One large flock contained over 50% of this total. Whilst on Wayoh I saw another eight following the same route heading south towards Jumbles, and another three passed during my later visit.
1 Cormorant
1 Grey Heron
1 Canada Goose. This single smallish individual seems to be one of the young ones from this year that was always smaller than the others. It is very tame and even tried to follow someone back to her house today after she had fed it and the ducks at Horrobin Lane Car Park. It does not mix with other geese when they are about.
