Colour-ringed waxwings
You may have read the current webzine article in the 'Bird News Extra' section of 'Birdguides' asking for information regarding the above. The Grampian Ringing Group are requesting records for birds they have ringed in NE Scotland. I fleetingly saw a colour-ringed bird in the flock at Weston Street, Bolton last Thursday. I sent my sketchy record to the group. The reply said it was possibly a bird they ringed in Nov/Dec 2016, but there wasn't enough detail for the record to be conclusive.
If you have more definite information or photographic evidence, the group (grampian@gmail.com) would like to have your records. Of course, this applies to the Bolton birds or any others that you have seen.

c50 Waxwings still at Weston Street, Bolton - flew off at 10.30am. Possibly more trees around, as the birds weren't there as we arrived, but flew in just after we got there. They didn't actually feed much before flying off. Still plenty of berries on one or two trees.
Couldn't find any at Castle Street.

Simon,
Of course William isn't your name. You must really be Chris Packham if these puns are anything to go by. I know the area well, I used to belong to Salford Lads Club. In those days, if you saw a pigeon and a house sparrow, you were lucky, so the thought of waxwings flying round about is quite surreal.
Simon Smith maybe :)

At the retail park at George Richards Way, Broadheath, Altrincham at least 30 Waxwing flew in at around 11:30, landing briefly in trees between Homebase and McDonalds, where there are just a small number of berries. They flew off over to a line of tall trees at Viaduct Road, where a very mobile and vocal flock of 41 to 43 were feeding on buds for a few minutes, then flying off over Manchester Rd at approx 11:45.

8 waxwings virtually outside my house (Sunfield, Romiley) at 11.00 a.m. when I was at work after five days off. Verified by my brother's photographs. They were in nearby trees first, but as soon as they touched down in the white-berried tree, the 'guided-missile' thrush homed in on them and they flew off towards Hilltop to the north. No further sign but, and I can testify from pounding the streets for the last two weeks looking for any, there are rafts of berries around the Romiley area.

the 20 waxwings at Altrincham retail park, altrincham were indeed very flighty this afternoon & kept disappearing for some lengths of time. when they did appear they made a quick grab of the berries before flying off again, it was very busy. they eventually sat still in one tree for about 10 mins above mcdonalds but the sun was going down right behind them.
As this thread is intended for Waxwings throughout the county, could anyone posting to it please include which area the Waxwings are in as there are multiple sites going on at any one time and even when replying to previous messages often leaves readers having to scroll through many posts to find out which area they are in. Please just take the few seconds longer it takes to add the location smile

34 Waxwing (in 1 flock in 1 tree) at 3.20pm at the end of Burnett Avenue just off Regent Rd in Salford. There was another smaller flock of 15+ with Starlings in another tree within 50 yards near Robert Hall St / Phoebe St. Very mobile, fantastic sound when stationary!

A total of 58 waxwings were on Thynne street in Bolton just a stones throw from the Train station and Sainsburys. They were mostly after some bright orange berries next to the Orlando village housing just of the roundabout junction. They were very bold with people not not with trucks- which is what put them up in my earlier report. They did return whilst I was stood 5 foot from the small orange berry tree and they literally then flew straight down towards me, skimming 2 ft past my head to get to the tree with the orange berries. Pity at this closeness, the light was in the wrong direction and in the shade. But an absolutely incredible experience!
I'm attempting to post here two pictures I rush-jobbed on in order to put on here. They won't appear on my Flickr page for a few days yet at least while I organise them properly.
11 Waxwings Castle Street, Bolton still this morning.
Went at lunchtime. couldn't count them as small groups were flying in and out of the Rowan tree behind the other side of the road. But there must have been at least 20. Unfortunately one flew into a window and didn't survive the impact.

I witnessed a flock of what I first thought to be starlings from Pomona & in the Salford side a decent sized flock of waxwings, I took some really poor photos(attached) but by the time I got to the area at 4.20pm which is off ordsall lane on st clemments road near the church they had gone. but I do think the photos tell what they are despite the quality. there could be at least 50 of them.
There were five waxwings and several redwings at the All Saints car park in Bolton at 2:45pm but they were spooked at 3:15pm and flew off in the direction of the Parish Church. I went back at 4PM but there was nothing of interest.
