late post from this morning. There were plenty of gulls on the half frozen reservoir. Mostly black-headed gulls, about a dozen lesser black backed, herring and common gulls with one adult herring gull looking a shade darker but not yellow legged style. Apart from this and Ian's report, fairly quiet. Plenty of chaffinch and house sparrows about with long tailed tits. And That's that!

This a.m. with most of the usual Eltonians, 5 Pochard , 4 Goldeneye and 1 Goosander with distant Pink-feet over. 2nd visit this afternoon(my son dragged me out in an attempt to find that elusive Scaup ), nothing more to add from the morning. So Elton Year list finishes with a respectable 141 species, many thanks to all the birders who have helped me out by finding birds or their company, they have enabled me to just hang on to my sanity (I think) Happy New Year to all and here's to next year. Still goosander and goldeneye, but shoveler has increased to 4. Also to note; 1 lonely lapwing, 4 bullfinch and a dozen herring gulls with 2 lesser black backed gulls. There were hundreds of black headed gulls on a field next to crow tree farm, far more than one the reservoir. Finally, I had a nice encounter with a common buzzard when I was near withins.

Also this morning a Chiffchaff was near wader point, frequenting the large willow tree and by late morning around 500 Herring Gulls bathing on the reservoir. Also 8 Teal on Within's and the pale Buzzard still present. Two Woodcock and 2 Pheasant on Spen Moor where the development of 200+ new houses has started, the green space around Elton just gets smaller and smaller
