Missed it too John - Spent most of the morning on the South Side trying to find one, was back within 1/2 an hour or so of the text but couldn't stay as we were going out so literally had 5 mins there. Shame.
Anyway, not a lot to report this morning other than around 600 Pink Feet over.

Great news, let's hope the shearwater did make it to the sea. It did appear to be getting stronger with each flight it took, but whether or not it had the energy to make it to the coast is another matter.

Just a few more record shots of this rather tatty looking Manx Shearwater. When I was there it looked like it would never get into the air again - constantly struggling.
The circumstances of its departure sounds a very similar scenario to the Cheshire one, John

At around 12.00 the Shearwater flew quite strongly from the middle of the flash and landed just off the spit (info Bill Harrison). I watched it there, fluttering as it had been all morning, then decided to go round to the rucks for a closer look. Never saw it again. I believe that whilst we were walking at around 12.15 it flew from the spit to the yacht club, continued and did an anticlockwise circuit of the flash passing the car park quite closely, flew past Horrocks, over the spit and was lost to view behind trees (info John Tromans). It was later looked for but seemed to have departed, so all may be well.
Earlier it was getting a bashing from 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and submerged for 10-20 second periods swimming some distance under water to evade them. This tactic worked and the gulls lost interest.
Cheers John.

I hope its ok to note; personally im not going to visit the shearwater myself but I am concerned about it from what I've read. Shearwaters need a nice breeze / updraph to stand the best chances of being able to stay in the air once airborn when they are off course inland which in turn, will help them get back to the coast (I speak from personal experience in this field). Unfortunately we have a ridge of high pressure bringing largely settled and calm weather for the week and they cannot feed inland. My point for this message is please, anyone who is going to see this bird to keep a watch on it, and if it's condition starts to deteriorate, please ring the RSPCA wildlife number (not the local office number) as far as I'm aware was 08705555999 but lets hope it wont come to that... Many thanks...

One at Neumann's Flash some years ago spent half a day hauled up on the bank & looked like a goner, but eventually it got back on the water & flew off, so hope for the Pennington one yet. Definitely not as much gull attention at Neumann's so that is a negative point for the current one.

A few phonescoped images of the Manx shearwater. The bird is clearly in distress, it was constanly flapping its wings, but it was able to fly, in fact one flight lasted about a minute and I thought it was going to leave. It's being harassed by gulls and 3 herring gulls nearly had it at one point. It doesn't seem to be oiled, but it's flight feathers look a bit tatty. Not sure it's going to make it to be honest, but still present when I left at 11:45.
