Short ish visit this arvo, but lots of birds in quite a small area opposite the Hall and towards the watermill. Flock of c.15 L T Tits had two treecreepers in tow. Then a Mistle Thrush in song before a big kerfuffle by various thrushes, tits and finches (inc several Brambling) eventually led to good close views of a Tawny Owl hiding in the top of a dying tree. A flock of finches and tits feeding on Beech mast contained 20-30 Bramblings over towards the watermill, best viewed from among the small beeches with guards round them. A Green Sandpiper on the flood beyond the wall. Put off visiting the oxbows due to the stile being covered in dog sh1t. Just beyond the wall in Dunham Town another flock of L T Tits had another Treecreeper which burst into song briefly, as did a Goldcrest.

During a late afternoon stroll around the park saw the moat was at a very low level. This is, according to a notice "to allow the installation of of a lake source heat pump", which takes heat from the water; this will be used to help warm the new visitor centre.
The low water has attracted three Grey Wagtails and a Kingfisher, a moat first for me.

Decent hour and a bit this am.
Nice to meet pat griffin...hope you saw the green woodpecker etc.
It's been ages since I saw any species of woodpecker at Dunham so was nice today to get 2:
1 Green woodpecker (f) gave distant but prolonged views near slaughterhouse
At least 3 Great spotted woodpecker
Pat said she had seen a lesser spotted woodpecker just before I met her near the obelisk: pity to miss the hattrick...maybe next time.
Also around:
Lots of redwing, really nice to have one singing too! Treecreeper +good numbers of tits and commoner species.
Didn't have time to look for green sandpiper.

I got to Dunham Massey today, late, as the traffic was a nightmare. I did see the green sandpiper straight away (thanks go to Richard the National Trust man who put me on to it), but the only woodpecker I saw/heard was a great spotted. I perhaps didn't give it as long as I should as I got a call about a water pipit on the moors above Hebden Bridge. So, I dashed back for that and missed out on that one too! Thanks again for the help I got.

Treecreeper
+good numbers of tits and commoner species.
Didn't have time to look for green sandpiper.

Bit of a graveyard down there today too. 2-4pm neither saw nor heard a thing much alive except Jackdaws. A dead Fallow Deer foal with its eye already pecked out down the bank from the obelisk. Redwings gone, no Green Sandpiper, 2 Stock Doves in the ditch. No sight nor sound of any woodpeckers. Freezing cold and snowing
That must have been a traumatic sight Sid. Was it feeding on road kill when it was hit?
I couldn't see it this morning so presumably something (fox?) or someone has moved it.
