Today's treat was not one, but two jays down in the garden. To give you an idea of the significance of this, magpies do not come down into the garden because it is too closed-in. The jay's had spotted a small pile of seeds I'd put out only about an hour before, and amongst them spotted a single peanut which one had in its bill when it returned to the safety of the trees. On the negative side, some of the seeds falling from the feeder are going uneaten since the start of the week as the hoovering woodpigeon went missing then, being replaced by a of scattering of feathers! Song thrush still visiting, when the blackbird lets it, and other things like dunnock and house sparrow having to watch their backs as one of two robins is apt to chase anything it fancies needs moving on.

Been stuck upstairs all day decorating the lads bedroom. There was an upside though, it's the back bedroom that over looks the garden. I had a bit of a bumper day back garden birding.

House sparrows, Starlings, 3 female blackbirds at the same time, 1 male. Song thrush, Dunnock, Wren, Coal tits, Great tits, blue tits. Wood pigeon, Collared doves, Magpies, Robin, Long tailed tits, Goldfinch, Jay, Sparrowhawk, Great spotted woodpecker, Chaffinch.

After having a possible treecreeper in my Middleton garden yesterday (the bird was in silhouette due to the sun, but it's location -as in the type of tree it was on - & behaviour were spot on) I got a definite this morning. A first for me in my garden & it was really confiding (at a distance of about 40 feet, anyway!).

After a period of instability (when my feeder blew off in high winds! ) I have now, with the help of the communal gardener and the warden, assembled two feeding stations in the grounds of our block in urban inner city Manchester- one is in a bush and the other is in the corner of the garden (proving actually most popular, but the gate is locked so can't really see which species are accessing until a weekday, unless I walked right around!) So far the garden list is Magpie and Starlings (both seperately on the fat balls) House Sparrow, and a single blue tit.

All feeders now in place and open for business as Winter really begins. The newest arrival has been a song thrush over the last two days, which is always a very good garden tick. A fine looking male greenfinch is always good to see. Also had over weekend (amongst others) nuthatch on feeder at front of house for first time, goldfinches, coal tits, jay, chaffinches. Apparently during the week a jackdaw was observed on the seed feeder twice, which is not a development I hope catches on amongst them. Looking forward to the first redpoll shortly, and who knows what else?
