A few photos of the glaucous gull this morning. It's a monster! Compare it's size to the nearby herring gulls and even the great black-backs! Also this morning, scaup and 3 little egrets.

The juvenile glaucous gull came into the roost at Pennington Flash again this evening at about 16:50, seen from Green Lane. It's a huge bird, compare it to the herring gulls and lesser black-backs in the photos. Also in the roost the adult Mediterranean gull again and the long-tailed duck was still out in the middle of the flash.

In the gull roost this evening, adult Mediterranean gull again but no sign of any Iceland or yellow-legged gull for me. I did however come across a really dark Scandinavian herring gull argentatus which at first I misidentified as yellow-legged gull, until I noticed its pink legs when it was preening. I've attached a few photos, it's a huge bulky bird with a darker mantle even than common gull.

I had a decent walk around Pennington Flash today, I managed a few new birds for the year and one new bird for the flash (for me). New for the flash was a woodcock flushed from the side of the footpath in the woods on the south side of the flash. Other highlights were water rail, adult Mediterranean gull (in the roost) and 2 ravens over. 52 species in total today.

This evening gull roost with Phil Rhodes;
Stunning adult and juvenile Iceland Gulls and the regular adult Mediterranean Gull. Long-tailed Duck still present.
Goosander- 63 (highest number this winter for me I think) Long Tailed Duck - 1 x 1st Winter Male - took some finding today ,but finilly popped up to the left of spit and prolonged nice scope views revealed the end of the bill is getting quite pink now,and no signs of the hook and line for 3 weeks now,so everything looking good and its stopped hanging close to the bank and now prefers the deep water,which tells me its feeling good. Tufted Duck-270 Goldeneye- 41 Jay-3 - pic below Little Egret - 2 Cormorant -41 Yellow Legged Gull- 1 adult came into roost I Left at 3.15pm and missed the Iceland gull but it was fairly misty and mirky at 3.15 so was not expecting to be able to see owt at dusk Cetti's Warbler- 1 Male plus the usuals :)

I would have liked to have heard it call before claiming it as a definate, but it looked good to me.

Considering we had 2 (loud) children with us we saw quite a bit still late yesterday afternoon (2pm - dusk). Usuals (Water Rail was the most exciting I guess but since it was the start of my year list, still quite fine). No Bittern but that was due to lack of patience in the hide (see note about babysitting children.. :) ). Car park was the busiest i have ever seen it.
