Should we be interfering with things of this nature? It is after all how nature is supposed to work. I know it can be harrowing seeing things like this, given that you have probebly invested in this Blackbird through garden feeders etc but the bottom line is the Sparrowhawk needs to eat as well.
Yep suppose you are right there Mark - guilt complex I guess going out to see what was happening and earlier, interferring by putting out food to help keep the birds going during the cold weather so putting them in a position where they can be eaten !!!!!
Don't worry about the Sparrowhawk, after it sat round for a while giving me the evil eye, it went into next door's garden and took another bird

I just saved a life in our Hale garden
Just as I sat down to have my lunch a Sparrowhawk grabbed a Blackbird from near the feeders. Went out to help, as the Sparrowhawk was mantling the Blackbird which luckily flew off minus a few feathers. The Sparrowhawk hung around for a while not too concerned by my presence.

Noticed this morning that groups who have spent the winter quite happily feeding together are now pairing off and chasing each other off the feeders. Goldfinches and Long Tailed Tits in particular. Two male Siskins were squaring up this morning as well.
I have a fully built Robins nest in an open fronted box in the garden. The weight of snow pulled down the bush it's behind though so it was on full view for a week. Fingers crossed they will still use it.

This morning in the snow has been amazing here in Wigan.
Never seen the feeders so busy.
At the moment I have a pair of Bullfinches on the black sunflower tray and a pair of Siskins on the niger feeder.
This is Highfield Wigan for goodness sake.
Earlier 6 Goldfinches, 6 Long Tailed Tits, 2 pairs of Chaffinches, a Nuthatch, Coal Tit, 4 Great Tits , pair of Blue Tits ,a pair of Robins and the odd Blackbird.
Around 9.00am I had 2 cock Bullfinches battling over the sunflower seeds.
45 years ago when I first got into Birds I would never believed I would see these species in my garden and not see a single Sparrow,Starling or Song Thrush when I put food out for the birds.
The rise of the Goldfinch over the last 3 years is amazing. The decline of the Humble House Sparrow very sad.

Strange behaviour from the Great tits they appear to be flicking seed from the feeder tray onto the ground , obviously not happy with the seed mix on offer. However easy pickings for the Reed bunting, Robin, Dunnock and Chaffinch.

Had 20 siskins in my garden in Bromley cross Bolton. I have seen large groups around the near by jumbles lately as well. Last year I was getting above 20 redpoll but only a maximum of 7 have been seen this year. Today I realised why. The siskins are very aggressive and every time a redpoll tried to come to the Niger seed feeders the siskins would see them off!!!
