Hi thanks, to be honest I can't recall it's back, my first reaction was Oh it's a Tufted Duck but then it's neck was extended and I've never seen a Tufted Duck like that and although it was a fair distance, it was longer and larger than usual. But as I looked down at my phone to check id it flew off.
Hopefully it will return and someone more experienced can say either way.

I ended a yearlong hoodoo/hiatus and roared back with a classic evening haul tonight. The last time I'd seriously birded was in Central Park (New York)
The weather tonight was lovely and the highlights were:
1 Cuckoo, sang in woodland area by Little Woolden NR
1 Yellow Wagtail, showing well, Chat Moss area
1 Whimbrel, called as it departed the nature reserve site, heading for Irlam.
All the key warblers and a Yellowhammer was nice, also Chat Moss area
Cheers,
Jon

Hi John,
just a thought to help your identification.
Greater Scaup I think can be tricky when they are asleep, on rippling water and at distance in poor light.
But you noticed this ones neck so Im assuming it was upright (swimming?). Did you not notice the back on the bird?
It wouldve been a noticeable pale grey.
