Female Blackbird persisted for well over an hour attacking it's reflection in window of garage (ignoring food below). Presumably it thought it was attacking a possible competitor for food, territory or a mate. Not sure. I had to put plastic covering over window to prevent this activity - as concerned it was sapping it's energy unnecessarily. Seemed to do trick. Anybody else seen this activity?

Hi Kristian, re your question about the Moorhen, we do have a stream running through the garden and a very small pond. more importantly I guess is the fact that there is a pond about 400m away and the woodland behind us is very damp

Greenfinch numbers have been building recently since I started feeding sunflower hearts again, 17 were counted today, the most seen since December 2011. Male and female Great Spotted Woodpeckers visit daily, rarely at the same time but seem to have settled into a routine of feeding from a favorite feeder, the male a fat filled coconut half the female a berry flavoured suet block. Also today a Goldcrest fed from the fat filled coconut half again as one did in mid December. Interestingly it appeared to come in and head straight for the feeder and then fly off, normally when seen they work around the garden not bothering with the feeder so perhaps this bird is taking fat more often than the 2 times it has been observed. Goldfinch are at about 12 birds, Chaffinches 3 or 4. Currently filling 2 sunflower heart feeders every day.

A day at the window bore reward again today as along with my normal garden visitors of Willow Tit (2), Blue/ Great / Coal Tit, Moorhen, Dunnock and Robin I had Pied Wagtail Great Spotted Woodpecker (2)
The Woodpeckers were particularly pleasing to see as after being regular visitors to the garden I've not seen them for 12 months or more.
Was strange to see a female Blackbird harassing a Dunnock for about 15 minutes not letting it come down to the ground to feed. The Dunnock didn't look to have much of a tail and what there was appeared white. Don't know whether this had any influence on the Blackbird's action. There was plenty of food about and the Dunnock wasn't really approaching where the Blackbird was feeding so I'm a little stumped by the behaviour. Any thought welcome

Best of 11 species seen in the hour this morning was the song thrush, which has been regular over the last couple of weeks. If I hadn't started early (8 a.m.), I wouldn't have had it on the list. MAx number of any species was 10 goldfinches, so some of them are here!. Several species favoured the feeder at the front of the house (which I cannot see at the same time). Great and coal tit, and nuthatch never or hardly ever fly over the roof to the back lately.
