Sparrowhawk attack in my garden yesterday morning. Tits flew in all directions but House Sparrow went deep into very thorny Pyracantha bush. Sparrowhawk was trying its best to get into the bush and grab the Sparrow with its talons until I chased it off, getting my closest ever view of that particular species. I know some folk would say you shouldn't interfere but we don't have many House Sparrows left round here!

The same in my old trafford garden Sid, the resident robin went straight to the top of the large tree at the bottom of the garden & started singing like it normaly does at dusk
Whilst watching the eclipse at 10am all the birds went into panic mode & as I stood up to see what was disturbing them I managed a nice new garden tick, a WOODCOCK flew low over my garden & was still dropping down & probably landed in one of the neighbouring gardens

At least one adult Mediterranean Gull calling away with a spiralling flock of Black-headed Gulls over the garden in Astley this afternoon. The flock lingered for around 20 minutes over fields at the back of the house (which extend over to Astley Moss) and over Morleys Hall and sand quarry. Half a dozen or so Meadow Pipits in the field right at the back of the house were obvious migrants but at least four Buzzards are resident mossland birds.
Well worth a few hours in the hammock in the end

Woken at 2.25am by a very loud Tawny Owl calling from the garden on the other side of the ginnel which runs along the side of my garden. As I looked for it through the bedroom window I saw the dark shapes of two more flying towards the window, then rising to go over my roof. Original one kept calling, with another one calling a little further away a couple of minutes later. Looks like the 3rd bird was chased away.

Female Blackbird persisted for well over an hour attacking it's reflection in window of garage (ignoring food below). Presumably it thought it was attacking a possible competitor for food, territory or a mate. Not sure. I had to put plastic covering over window to prevent this activity - as concerned it was sapping it's energy unnecessarily. Seemed to do trick. Anybody else seen this activity?

A female Siskin was on the nyjer feeder this morning, a nice surprise in view of the recent news that numbers visiting gardens are well down on the averages this winter. Also a pair of Long-tailed Tits have recently started visiting the fat feeders regularly. A Goldcrest has been seen feeding on fats 5 or 6 times now. Greenfinch numbers reached 33 about a week ago but have dropped to about 15 birds now, with the Goldfinch they're still managing to make a massive dent in the sunflower heart stocks. It's a good job that the better half doesn't realise exactly how cheap they're not.
My single annual visit from a Siskin hasn't happened this year unfortunately.

The following were all seen within half an hour:

2 Goldfinch, 1 Chaffinch, 1 Collared Dove and 2 Starlings yesterday
Also in the field behind my house:
15 Redwings (some in my trees as well) c30 Woodpigeon 12 Pied Wagtails 40 Jackdaws 2 Carrion Crows 2 Magpies 1 Kestrel 2 Starlings 60+ Black-Headed Gulls

Went out my back garden in Radcliffe area to feed my local blackbirds at 8:30am with suit pellets when believe it or not a local goldcrest flew up from the ground within 3 feet from where I was stood. He flew up to the shrub next to where he was. This is the first time i've ever known a goldcrest to feed on the ground! He must have been picking at the bits that has fallen from the suit feeder directly above where he was. Nice!!
