A flurry of Pink-footed Geese seen heading east from the Astley Peat Pools late morning as follows:
830 at 12:15am (right over the pools, carefully checked ), as they headed further east (over Salford way) split into 2 skeins
the following skeins were all at a further north latitude, Atherton-Walkden way:
310 at 12:25 330 at 12:27 240 at 12:29
perhaps all the above were 1 large skein at one point further west as they were all close behind each other.

Beat me to it with the Ashton lot. 10mins later or so there was a distant party heading in what would be a N/NE direction over Golborne by my reckoning. Very distant so only an estimate of 80-100 birds. Perhaps someone at Pennington picked them up.

Yes it was you! Thanks - I thought you lived in Irlam. Another cause for Pinkfeet changing direction could be aircraft, which are particularly low-flying at Barton, near you - particularly the very noisy police helicopters which operate out of there! But the dark cloud over the Pennines which was particularly noticeable at the weekend is a very likely cause for them to turn back.

Hi Judith, If its me you are asking the question of I appologise for omitting my location. I was viewing from my garden in Irlam, the birds were quite high and the formation began to break up over trafford park I guess( very approximate). Sids explanation seems quite plausible to me but there could be other theories and I would be glad to hear them. regards Mike
