my feeders in my old Trafford garden have been very busy over the last couple of months & this morning was just an amazing sight. I have 1 6port feeder with sunflower hearts & 1 4port feeder with niger seed hanging in the tree at the bottom of my garden & I could not get an accurate count of the goldfinch & greenfinch that were just fighting & squabbling over each other to get on the feeders, but an approximate guess would be well over 100 finches majority goldfinch, certainly was an amazing sight also I have a feeding station closer to the house with wild bird seed, sunflower seed & fat balls & they tend to be visited by the local house sparrows & starlings, whilst some were feeding on the feeders this morning I got a count of the house sparrows that were actually feeding on the path & managed 65, they were picking on the weeds that were growing in the cracks of the flags. there was still lots of house sparrows in the tree & bushes so there is a big number of them in the area which is good to see.

the resident swifts are now almost departed, yesterday evening I could only see 9 swifts whizzing around & from what I could make out from the back garden there was at least 3 still occupied nest sites in the neighbouring houses. this year I had 2 pairs nesting under my eaves, 1 pair left the nest the weekend of 1st/2nd of august, I believe there could of been 2 juveniles with them, so hopefully they went safely, no signs of any casualties that I could see in mine or the neighbours garden. the second pair definitely had 2 juveniles & fledged on Tuesday 11th august, but unfortunately I did not get to see them fledge as I was at work, the reason to why I know this is because I have had a camera on this pair of swifts this year & has been really cool to see the juveniles growing up, my calculations suggest that they fledged after 41 days which does seem to be correct by some books. watching the habits of the swifts in the nest has been very interesting & entertaining

whilst watching the resident swifts over my old Trafford garden this evening at 9.15pm I noticed a large v formation flock of birds high in the sky heading in a westerly direction, my initial thought with the naked eye was "that's a lot of cormorants" but when I got my bins on them to my surprise they were black ducks with fast wing beats, common scoters ! I am confident enough to say they were & when I got a count there was 110+. as I watched them fly away on a couple of occasions they seemed to loose the v formation & look as if they were loosing height so being very curious about this I decided to jump on my bike & head for Salford quays ( the direction they were heading) needless to say that when I got there, nothing.

as I was almost at my gate to my house along my road in old Trafford at 9.10 pm I noticed 40-50 swifts were making a lot of noise whizzing around & the reason became clear that there was a hobby in pursuit of the flock, but it made no real attempt on the swifts & decided to fly off in a north westerly direction. I stood at my gate for another 5 mins to see if it would return but it didn't.
