Checked the gull roost tonight. Huge numbers of gulls compared to the last time I was there. The roost spread from in front of the sailing club right across the flash, past Horrocks Hide and almost down to the car park. Just to add to the fun, the birds were split into two lines so it was a case of scanning two groups. I'd estimated at least 9000 -10,000 Black-headed and several hundred each of Lesser Black-backed and Herring with a good smattering of Great Black-backed and Common Gulls. No Iceland Gull, although it could easily have been in there as, perversely, most of the large gulls chose to sat side on to the wind, meaning they were facing me head on. Odd as most of the Black-headed and Common Gulls sat side on making identifying the single adult Mediterranean Gull reasonably easy to pick out.
The Jackdaws were in full swing and at one point appeared to be joined by a separate group that seemed to come from the reserve area on the north bank, meaning there must have been about 1000 birds in the air. It looked like there might be two roosts in the area.

3rd winter Iceland gull adult yellow-legged gull 2 adult Mediterranean gull I had a gull that looked very much like a 3rd winter Caspian gull ( possibly the yellow ringed X106) it was bathing & lifted itself out of the water a little but not enough to see if there was a possibility of a ring on it. I just thought I would mention this for the next time someone checks the roost.
