No sign today of the Greenland White Fronted Goose only 30 pink footed Geese in the whole area ,change of weather I think moved them to easier feeding.
I was watching the Greenland white-fronted goose at the same time as John around lunch time today. It spent most of its time in the fields to the west of Holcroft Lane near Franks Farm, but once was flushed by a farm vehicle and the flock headed well east, over Little Woolden Moss and Greater Manchester airspace before turning and returning to the same fields. Walking near Great Woolden Hall this afternoon, a flock of somewhere between 150-200 Pink-Footed Geese flew east to the north of the M62, at about 3:35pm. They circled and went down somewhere in the vicinity of Little Woolden Moss. I went to the reserve and walked to the west end, where there was a flock of about 50 Lapwing in flight, but couldnt locate the geese. I didnt have time to search north of the reserve due to limited daylight.

Ian where you had the Fieldfare ...that is Field Number 38/2...basically when I numbered the Moss fields the extent of the photocopier I used didn't quite capture the most western edge of the Moss...but Steve Atkins and I agreed for the sake of my records we could call this section 38/2...sadly, in my opinion this has, for the first time in years, been sown with a winter sown cereal...it seems to have lost its erstwhile sogginess now seemingly allowing autumn ploughing...( due to the recent droughts of spring/summer) which supported large flocks of Lapwing in the winter...and because it was a slow to grow grass/silage crop it suited an excellent number of breeding Lapwing (plus the occasional breeding Curlew and Redshank)...OK today it was good for Wintering Thrushes which do, I admit, find food within such winter sown crops...BUT I dread the coming breeding season results for the Lapwing....Dave.

Further highlights from Little Woolden Moss this early afternoon included:

A flock of 252 Fieldfares in fields just along the western edge of the reserve, which included a leucistic bird displaying a whitish head and pure white lesser coverts
