In my Swinton garden this morning:
An immature female Sparrowhawk caught a starling, it looked as though the starling was doomed until the local magpie patrol stepped in, allowing the starling to make the great escape. The Sparrowhawk hung around for a good half hour, under the watchful eyes of the local blackbirds, giving some great views of this magnificent bird.
Although I enjoyed the experience my wife now questions whether we should remove our feeders, after I explained it was nature my wife started to feel sorry for the Sparrowhawk for who on this occasion will find her breakfast some where else.
Cheers Jay

After a fruitless hour-long vigil on the hilltop close to home, I stepped out into the garden at 4.55 p.m. and spied my first two swallows of the year, at height, singing their way north-westwards. There ought to have been 21-gun salutes, street parties and general scenes of joy. But unless you are one of the initiated, like us, it will have gone unnoticed by the many who are dead behind the eyes. Pity.

Aldi sometimes have good quality and reasonably priced feeders with metal cages - these work very well for keeping squirrels out.
