Hi Joe,
The berry trees around usual sites in Offerton are a bit depleted now - I'm not sure how Woodley is faring. As reported on 2nd December both Stockport and Hazel Grove railway stations still have trees with berries and are worth checking out if passing.
Good luck, John

Joe,
They seem to have skirted around Stockport this year, but the most reliable sites in recent years have been the approach to Stockport station, Woodley Precinct, Hempshaw Lane near the Flying Dutchman pub & the Henry St/Banks Lane/St Johns Wood sites in Offerton...but if they are in the borough, they could be anywhere.
So, class...homework for this weekend is to find some in Stockport -- Edited by Phil Panton on Saturday 4th of December 2010 08:35:10 AM

4 briefly on the tree tops opposite the Magistrates Court , Wigan at approx. 12:30. Then later in the day, probably 14:45-15:00, there were in excess of 90 birds looking like they were going to roost in the same trees. These periodically swooped down to the still heavily berry laden small trees and a very small car park to the left and over the road from the Court house as you look from the front. They flew off in the direction of the Scholes flats. Given the number of berries still there, I would suggest it may be worth looking there at least tomorrow and possibly Sunday too.
There were at least 4 Blackbirds, two Song Thrushes and one (possibly two) Mistle Thrush trying to scare them off with surprisingly little success
Off the Waxwing topic, if it interests anyone, on the canal next to the locks (go past the magistrates court, turn right at the lights and up the hill. Next to a disused pub) there are three Bullfinches (2xM, 1xF) showing extremely well for photographs on the opposite side of the towpath.

I followed up Rob's sighting taking the train as Hazel Grove to Stockport is only a 10 minute journey. When I walked out of Stockport station (09.40) there were 9 Waxwings right in front of me in the Grand Central car park. They tried to visit the Rowans but were seen off by 2 Mistle Thrushes. They then waited in the bare trees opposite eating snow from the branches but I could now only count 6.
I left these in Stockport and as I got off at Hazel Grove, even before I left the station (10.15), I saw another 9 Waxwings in the car park - bizarre !! These eventually flew across the A6 presumably into some suburban gardens.
A classic case of seeing double
Cheers, John

Andy Makin had 220 McCormick St, Wigan early am, but thought this was definitely an undercount. I was around the centre of Wigan for about 3 hours with various things to do there, and although I only saw 2 at Hardybutts, I saw 2 flocks each of about 30-40 flying across the town centre, and at about 4pm I saw about 7 flying into the large Leylandii copse near the high-rise flats, so perhaps they are roosting there?? I was driving at the time though!

Atleast 8 Waxwings on Duncan Street, Salford pre-9am this morning were terribly harassed by a couple of Mistle Thrushes vigourously defending the couple of heavily laden berry trees. After spending several minutes in the top of the tall trees there they headed off across Regent Road, perhaps into the Ordsall Estate.
