Karen/Richard,
I'm intrigued by the recent 'second summer' Little Gull and would just like to clarify. Was this bird a true second summer (third calendar year bird with full black hood and remnant black to the outer few primaries only and no dark on the carpal/coverts/tail)? I only ask as we don't really get many of this age for whatever reason and I have an unhealthy interest in gulls
Ian, I can confirm that it was a true "second summer" since I had to look it up when I got home to confirm what I was seeing i.e. a bird with a full black hood, small amounts of black on the primary wing tips and what seemed to me to be paler underwing coverts (or "white armpits" as I wrote down in my notebook). Quite noticeable when seen next to the full adult it was flying with!
Hope that helps.
