10+ Waxwings (seen by Alan Nuttall and I) in tall Poplars behind back garden of house at bottom of Wellham Road, off Carr Lane, Hawkley at approx. 1 p.m. today. They had been attempting to feed on yellow berries on an ornamental Rowan in the back garden but were driven off by a pair of Mistle Thrushes.
A cyclist I was speaking to at the Wigan Flashes on Friday said he'd seen at least 30 Waxwings in the same spot sometime last week.

Bit of a late posting but been without computer until now. 4 Waxwings near Parfets cash and carry close to pyramid 9.30 Saturday. These birds were picking last few berries from trees in car dealership.
A friend visited the site this morning, approx 8.45 and had 40 birds. I had a look a couple of hours later with camera in hand but no sign. Camera always kiss of death.

Back in late Dec 2008 there was several Waxwings on the rosehips and rowans at Stanley Green Retail Park. I was quite surprised to see the Waxwings taking the relatively large rosehips. In early November I received a report from one of the locals of a group down near Fairy Lane. Although I couldn't relocate them the lack of Rowan's in the area made me wonder if they were feeding on the plentiful supply of Rosehips or possibly considering the amount of livestock in the area flycatching.

...well if it was Pete there was nowt there c.2.30!
I then went round back to the river and up the path to the clubhouse and down Fairy Lane and the bit renamed Golf Road. The motorway verge here has a large crop of rosehips. I wondered if perhaps they had dropped in, found them to their disliking and flown off. Later though Ian Keith told me he has seen Waxwings eating rosehips. Nothing else around there walking round past the riding schools back to the sub station.

Joe,the thrushes and blackbirds have been trying unsuccesfully to defend those trees for days so i think there is every chance waxwings will be back. there seems to be a number of sites in the area where they are feeding. keep trying and im sure you will be rewarded.

I checked them out this afternoon but no sign of the flock alond Alder Drive and the rest of the area Joe. Still a few berries left, but not many!
Met Mike Duckham this morning and although 3 Waxwings were present when I arrived, they flew off before I even had chance to get out of the car.
We did a search of the area and surrounding areas including Roundthorn Industrial Estate and Baguley but no further sign unfortunately.
For anyone visiting the area, be warned that there are some very suspicious residents on Alder Drive due to a spate of burglaries and Mike and I were stopped and questioned by the police who took our details and got on the radio to check us out.
