Joey - they could shoot the geese (which are a quarry species) as long as they were flying over land where they had permission to shoot. Not over land where they don't have permission. Eg. You can't stand in your back garden and shoot into your neighbour's garden. Same principle applies. Tomorrow is the last day of the open season, after that it will be an offence to shoot most species (other than Woodpigeons/some gulls/Canada Geese/ House Sparrow and Starlings despite Red list status) and any instance should be reported to the police as a Class 1 firearm will be being used - they send the chopper up for those!

The Skiens of 250 & 160 that Melanie B had seen earlier flew directly over head NW at 10.40.
Thanks for the tip off Melanie
prior to those 4 Skiens (3 of which were massive) flew west to the south of Radcliffe at 10.35 at a guess there had to be more than 600 birds.
Also picked up the 80 over Worsley at 11.35 (seen from Pilsworth)

Saw the c.110 flock over worsley at 10.45am heading west also c.80 heading west at 11.35am Interestingly both drew a fair bit of fire from the shooters on the mosses (to say it sounded like a war zone would be no exaggeration) and the latter skein abandoned their v-shaped formation altogether, for a shoal effect (like fish) and headed south for a few hundred feet before turning back west.
Are shooters allowed to hunt the geese? Irresponsible either way as the geese were over the other side of the canal from the moss anyway
