Ian was correct, it's not travelled far. This bird was ringed on 25/06/2016 by the RSPCA Ringing Group as part of a project looking at movements to and from Lake Windermere, Cumbria, where the majority are ringed during the annual moult period.

I had a good chat with the head groundskeeper at Avro golf course this morning. I had noticed an increase in nest boxes on the course, and he confirmed that they are trying hard to increase the biodiversity on the course by improving it as a habitat. So far, they have been rewarded by tree sparrows using the nest boxes, and a pair of garden warblers (seen today) nesting in a bank of scrubby brambles. Previously this had been tidily strimmed, so the decision to let it go wild has clearly payed off.

I don't want to get bogged down with the physics, but as long as the humidity of the air is less than 100%, and the water is liquid, then some evaporation will take place, due to the heating of water molecules near the surface through molecular motion. This process is augmented by other factors such as increased temperature, air movement, and reduced air pressure. Draining the water will also reduce the volume, of course

John,
Are you saying that tarmac is impermeable? I realise some water will be lost to evaporation at any temperature, but I was trying to emphasize that the water would last many weeks was it not for man draining the land to death. It's a great pity that we have to watch transient sites like Woodford because there is no natural standing water for wildlife in the Stockport area (that comes to mind). Still, when all the new roads are built we'll be able to get out of the place quicker!!

15 Lapwings
Andy did use , John used and David so it's light-hearted as well as educational...
