7.00 till 9.00 this morning and lovely bright conditions. Quite a bit of visible migration going on for the first hour or so but as it was a clear sky most of the birds moved through at height.
70 Meadow Pipits over southwards. 29 Alba Wagtails over south. 3 Mistle Thrushes 2 Jays 12 Chaffinches 13 Yellowhammers 16 Reed Buntings 9 Linnets 25 Lapwings over east. 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker 4 Snipe - two flew off north after roosting on the moss then later two over south - may have been the same birds though. 2 Kestrels 7 Goldfinches 14 Skylarks - over south. 5 Song Thrushes 13 Swallows over south c120 Assorted gulls on the ploughed field to the north. Around 100 Black-headed gulls plus about 20 Lesser black backed and a single Herring gull.

Thanks for the support. Patching definitely throws up the odd good bird occasionally.
Went back today with the camera looking for the odd looking Pipit but no sign.

Here here Dennis, patch workers deserve massive recognition, I share Nick's enthusiasm, I had the good fortune to find the first record of Coal Tit for Salford Docklands last autumn
That Pipit sounds quite interesting, I wonder what else is out there on the Mosses

Late afternoon mooch in the dull conditions.
22 Meadow Pipits - mostly over south in ones and twos. 9 Linnets - flying over 5 Chaffinches 2 Reed Buntings 2 Buzzards 4 Yellowhammers 3 Goldfinches 1 Coal Tit - New patch tick. It's taken me a long time to get this one down here and it was part of a sizeable mixed tit flock moving up and down the eastern side. 2 Willow Tits - also part of the tit flock. 16 Long Tailed Tits - the bulk of the tit flock. 3 Pheasants - all poults. 3 Pied Wagtails - over north. 1 Snipe 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 Grey Heron
Also, a Pipit species that flew up from the boggy area and perched in a bare tree. Bad light and distance prevented a good look at it but I'm fairly sure it wasn't a Meadow Pipit due the obvious supercilium it had plus the slightly larger size.

Quiet morning in gloom 10 - 12noon.
Very few small birds about at the time.
1 swallow 1 swift 2 yellowhammer 3 great tits 1 reed bunting heard
Also
2 Jays
5 Kestrels (2 flew out of tree belt S of moss as I walked along the airstrip, and another 3 were duelling with corvids over the field SE)
1 Common Buzzard flew out of trees edging the old quarry as I walked past, leading to the swift scrambling of a squadron of corvids to escort it away S out of their airspace!
2 Grey Partridge on edge of field W, and 6 more flushed on the main moss near the pond, as usual scaring the livingdaylights out of me! Good view though, as they fanned out in various directions.

Very quiet on much of the moss this morning but the saving grace was a roving tit flock in the trees by the airstrip. A stunning male Lesser Whitethroat was in amongst the flock and showed itself well several times. Also in this flock were at least three Willow Warblers and a Common Whitethroat. Further down the airstrip as I was still attempting to watch the tit flock a Tree Pipit flushed from a tree to the rear and 'buzzed' several times as it flew off east.
3 Kestrels - family party and constantly calling each other. 5 Meadow Pipits 1 Sparrowhawk - female. 4 Reed Buntings 1 Jay 1 Chiffchaff 4 Willow Warblers 1 Song Thrush 1 Lesser Whitethroat. 1 Tree Pipit 1 Common Whitethroat 3 Chaffinches 2 Yellowhammers 10 Goldfinches 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 Pheasant - male.

Still rather quiet down on the moss at the moment but signs of migration are beginning grow. Plenty of Woodpigeons moving about this morning plus several Swallows through south. Best bird by far though was a Tree Pipit that buzzed through. It was one of those moments were you hear a bird but your brain doesn't quite register it straight away. Fortunately the Pipit buzzed three times as it passed overhead.

Another cracking morning on the moss with not one but two year ticks and one of those was a new patch tick too. A Hobby flying through southward at 6.10am was a great start to the day and my first one down there this year. The best bird was a Green Sandpiper that flew in from the east while I was stood by the pond. It did a quick circle before heading away south, calling away as it departed. A very good bird down there!
Other notable birds this morning were:
1 Sparrowhawk - a female that's probably the same bird from yesterday and seems to be just loading around as I saw it several times. 3 Mallard over west. 1 Moorhen on the pond. 1 Corn Bunting 2 Grey Partridges 1 Grey Heron over south. 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker - male. 1 Jay 1 Kestrel

A new patch tick was very welcome this morning in the form of a flyover Goosander. Other than this the moss seemed a little quieter and definitely felt as though there'd been a bit of a 'clear out' of juveniles.
1 Corn Bunting 9 Yellowhammers 10 Goldfinches - five juvs. 3 Mistle Thrushes 3 Chaffinches 2 Pheasants - both males. 8 Willow Warblers 19 Linnets 9 Reed Buntings 4 Meadow Pipits 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker 4 Common Whitethroats 2 Greenfinches 1 Goosander over west. 1 Sparrowhawk - female getting loads of grief from a Jay. 1 Jay 1 Pied Wagtail

A male Corn Bunting singing briefly by the footpath. A good number of Woodpigeons moving over north too but the real highlight was a mass gathering of Swifts over the airstrip. Shed loads of juvenile birds around this morning with the highlight being a Sedge Warbler by the path down to the moss. Sedge Warblers always seem to be passage birds down here and this was my first for this year. A juvenile Chiffchaff was also a pleasant surprise too. Another early one today and a nice low mist covering the moss for the early part of my walk. Loads of juveniles around again as before with the star attraction being the large numbers of juvenile Swallows hanging around the pond. They repeatedly perched on the wires over the line and were repeatedly scattered by each passing train. I watched this happen quite a few times, it was quite comical really. Incidentally, Network Rail have installed new fencing along the line next to the eastern crossing. It looks as though they are going to put a gate on to it which may not be a bad thing as it may deter the kids who currently use this end to ride their motorbikes.

Out at six this morning for another mooch. Sadly, a Reed Bunting nest I stumbled across a couple of days ago has failed. I re-found the nest this morning and discovered four dead chicks in and around the nest. They were barely days old. To be honest when I found the nest I thought it was way too exposed to be successful as it was clearly visible at the bottom of a small clump of dead bracken next to the path. I reckon that yesterdays rainfall may have been the main factor in the nests failure and my suspicion is that this may be a first year breeder and relatively inexperienced but I'd be very grateful on any thoughts on this.

Went to the moss this morning saw a sedge warbler on the gorse and a hobby over the airfield being mobbed.
However the shocker was the top end which now resembles a motorcross track like hawkstone park. I heard them Saturday but I had not brought my mobile out otherwise I would have called 101. I would urge people to contact LENDF (via google) and maybe they can get this curtailed because this cannot go on.

A large bank of fog moving through the moss this morning at 6.00am lifted my spirits in the hope of something good dropping in. As it turned out I wasn't to be disappointed. Three low flying House Martins brought me a new year tick but the highlight was undoubtably the Spotted Flycatcher I found down in the southern corner. As I approached the area I could see and hear a lot of activity from several Starlings and a couple of Chaffinches so I hung back for a while to see what else was knocking around and up popped the Flycatcher. I lost it after about five minutes but not before I managed a record shot for prosperity. This is a bird I've often looked for down here but never been lucky until now so I was understandably well chuffed.
