male & 2 female goosander on the river Irwell viewed from cathedral approach, then another 2 seen in flight heading down stream towards the lowry hotel shortly after. also 1 goldcrest & 1 grey wagtail, mistle thrush heard singing.

A Moorhen ran across Great Ancoats Street infront of the wagon about 10am from Pollard Street near the Ashton Canal towards Chapeltown Street. I glanced over as it dodged the busy traffic over both carriageways and I'll never know how it made it!

1 redwing, 2 mistle thrush both with beaks full of food, I tried to look if they actually had a nest around but couldn't see one & they disappeared. 3 blackbirds & 4 goldfinch all in exchange square. a pair of goosander on the river Irwell from Blackfriars bridge also 1 grey wagtail. 1 chaffinch, 1 mistle thrush in vimto park.

Siberian Chiffchaff at MMU this morning but not subsequently - it was in the central courtyard but most certainly wasn't half an hour later - perhaps it might head to the Irwell, some nice bushes there for it. Couldn't see it in All Saints Park but it was blowing a gale at the time.
If it reappears I'll let folks know....

From Sunday 14 Jan
2 collared dove collecting nesting material in Rozel Square.
1 kestrel flew west low over St John's Gardens in the morning to the displeasure of all the other birds foraging around.
Had a goldcrest on the balcony mopping up spilled bits of the peanuts which afforded great views.

13 species from a brief watch from my window, Rozel Sq, St John's Gardens this morning.
1F greenfinch, 1M house sparrow, 1 goldcrest, 1 great tit, 1F chaffinch, 2 mistle thrush, 2 robin, 2 dunnock, 2 woodpigeon, 4 blackbird, numerous blue tit and goldfinch, and some feral pigeons.

Grey wagtail feeding around the car park at Rozel Square. Other than several blackbird in the central courtyard, two mistle thrush and a calling redwing although I couldn't locate it - was up in a cedar tree somewhere.

Is it just me or have others noticed an increase in the numbers of gulls, mainly Herring and Lesser Black-backed in the city centre?
I wouldn't be surprised if they had bred on roofs around Piccadilly train station, though I have no evidence to confirm it other than adult behaviour.
I documented some breeding evidence around Piccadilly Basin this year Steve.

A Kingfisher flew towards and then over me on Chepstow Street at 4pm. Came from the behind Rain Bar and continued in the direction of the Midland Hotel.

Goldfinch flew into the window and the pigeons went nuts, grabbed my camera and low and behold a stunning male sparrowhawk just missed a pigeon and sat in the tree outside my window. Mobbed by crow and flew off back towards the gardens. Rozel sq. St John's Gardens.
Chiffchaff feeding in the cypress trees at Rozel Square, even briefly came onto the honeysuckle on my balcony.
Also a small influx of 2 or 3 coal tits about a week ago, not sure if they'll hang around.

Spotted flycatcher still present. First seen agaib at 4.50 then regularly between 5.10 and 5.30. Remaining high in the same trees between red lace sculpture and bike shed.

Female Sparrowhawk currently hunting Pigeons outside the Birdcage nightclub on Shude Hill. Just made an attempt on one but the Pigeon managed to evade it and the Sparrowhawk suddenly looped up and perched on the lamp-post opposite the birdcage.

Yesterday morning. A flock of about a dozen Thrushes seen on Boad Street ( off Store Street behind Piccadilly Station) feeding on berry trees. Unfortunately it was too grey and dull for a proper ID but have never seen Mistle or Song Thrush is that number together in CC so distinct possibility they were Redwings.

A friend sent me this image of a Kestrel with kill. It was taken with an iPhone in Back Piccadilly yesterday morning.
