Dark morph Honey Buzzard, probably a bird seen near here a couple of days ago, again over Charters Moss just over the border in Lancashire at around 9:30 this morning. Then seen again later in the morning circling high over the same area being mobbed by a Buzzard. Also 6 Common Buzzards.
Also two separate Ospreys though south.

An Osprey drifted slowly south from Belmont, past the mast low over the moor and then out quite high over Lomax Wifes Plantation at 3.50pm today, also c2500 Swallow and 135 Sand Martin south in 3 hours. With Phil Rhodes and Partly Dave Broome.

2pm to 5pm - Walker Fold incl. Brownstones Quarry, Gilligants Farm, Roscow's Wood, then a brief visit to Walker Fold Car Park area.
Brownstones Quarry - Female Sparrowhawk flushed & about 50 Swallows mobbing a Kestrel overhead.
Gilligants Farm area - M & F Pheasant, Goldfinch, Linnet, Common Whitethroat, Tree Pipit calling, Juvenile Stonechat.
Roscow's Wood - 2 Buzzards & about 20 Mistle Thrush mainly juvenile in nearby field.
Walker Fold Car Park area - Kestrel hunting very low down just to the rear of the car park with 2 juveniles chasing each other nearby.
Also 2 Spotted Flycatchers in the copse 100 yds to the north of the car park & 3 Juvenile Stonechat on a nearby wall.

A quick look around Burnt Edge this evening produced at least 4 Spotted Flycatchers, multiple Stonechat, Snipe, Raven, Sparrowhawk and what I think were 2 Tree Pipits in one of the small pine plantations.
Andy Makin had 40 Willow Warblers on the Burnt Edge/Holdens circuit this morning.

Highlights from Walker Fold, the east side of Burnt Edge/Sugar Loaf to along Coal Pit Lane this morning included a ringtail Hen Harrier hunting Smithills Moor (probably the same juvenile Andy Makin had on the 1st), 2 Spotted Flycatchers (one juvenile/1st winter north end of Walker Fold Woods and one Green Nook Farm), 4 Chiffchaff, 22 Willow Warbler, the large flock of Goldfinch (250+ with 14 Greenfinch amongst them) still around Walker Fold, 9 Lesser Redpoll around Brownstones Quarry with a further 2 or 3 around Holdens Farm and a Grasshopper Warbler still reeling at the bottom of Burnt Edge.
This morning the trees at the bottom of Burnt Edge and Sugar Loaf Plantation area held a Pied Flycatcher, Spotted Flycatcher, juvenile Redstart, a Tree Pipit, 33 Willow Warbler and 26 mainly juvenile Stonechat.

20th July 2022 - 1.30pm to 4pm - Matchmoor Lane & Burnt Edge/Holden's Farm circuit.
2 Kestrel hunting over Matchmoor Lane with a further one over Holden's Farm.
About 40 juvenile Mistle Thrush scurrying through what's left of the pine plantation on Burnt Edge Lane - the same birds later seen in trees to the rear of Holden's Farm.
Good numbers of Juvenile Stonechat & Meadow Pipit also along Burnt Edge Lane.
Holden's Farm area - Plenty of Goldfinch, a few Linnet, Swallows & singles of Grey Wagtail, Willow Warbler & male Pheasant.

2pm to 4pm - Burnt Edge & Holden's Farm circuit, very blustery so sightings quite limited.
Of note :- The usual 2 Ravens cronking away around Burnt Edge pine planation with a brief view of a Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Grey Heron, Pied Wagtail, 3 Dunnocks & about 25 Redwing over at Holden's Farm with a male Kestrel flashing through.
On Matchmoor Lane a Black Headed Gull with a very full hood similar to a Mediterranean Gull.

20th July 2022 - 1.30pm to 4pm - Matchmoor Lane & Burnt Edge/Holden's Farm circuit.
2 Kestrel hunting over Matchmoor Lane with a further one over Holden's Farm.
About 40 juvenile Mistle Thrush scurrying through what's left of the pine plantation on Burnt Edge Lane - the same birds later seen in trees to the rear of Holden's Farm.
Good numbers of Juvenile Stonechat & Meadow Pipit also along Burnt Edge Lane.
Holden's Farm area - Plenty of Goldfinch, a few Linnet, Swallows & singles of Grey Wagtail, Willow Warbler & male Pheasant.

Georges Lane (Wilderswood-Lancs border) : 1m Lesser Redpoll, 2 Lapwings, 2 Stonechats, 2 Grey Wagtails and a
family of 5 Willow Warblers.
Burnt Edge area : : 2 Kestrels, 4 Ravens, 1 Lesser Redpoll, 4 Linnets and 4 Stonechats.
Georges Lane (Wilderswood-Lancs border) :
1 Green Woodpecker, a family of 4 Stonechats, 1 pair of Common Whitethroats, 3 Ravens, 1 Oystercatcher and 4 Lapwings.
Burnt Edge area :
2 Skylarks, 1m Kestrel, a pair of Willow Warblers (1 carrying small green caterpillars), 8 Linnets, 5 Stonechats and 1 Lesser Redpoll.

Late news for yesterday on and around the top of Winter Hill when a male Whinchat, 30 Wheatear, 2 Ring Ouzel, 3 Stonechat and a single Chiffchaff were present.

This morning, a total of 6 Ring Ouzel were across the moors but mainly on the top of Smithills Moor. A total of 71 Wheatear also included 63 in a small area on the top of Winter Hill.

This morning, 9 Ring Ouzel spread widely across the moors, 31 Wheatear (included a leucisitic bird) and a Tree Pipit in Burnt Edge.

This morning 1551 Meadow Pipit went north in a steady stream between 06:45-11am from Two Lads Hill. 2 Golden Plover also north and male and female Wheatear in fields off the bottom of Mast Road.

Ring Ouzel (1) First of the year for me! Stunning male - seen from path about two thirds up to Winter Hill Summit from the Winter Hill Trespass Monument (Monument is just off Coal Pit Road near Gilligants Farm). Bird flew from left of the path to the right side in direction of Dean Ditch.

2pm to 4pm - Burnt Edge & Holden's Farm circuit, very blustery so sightings quite limited.
Of note :- The usual 2 Ravens cronking away around Burnt Edge pine planation with a brief view of a Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Grey Heron, Pied Wagtail, 3 Dunnocks & about 25 Redwing over at Holden's Farm with a male Kestrel flashing through.
On Matchmoor Lane a Black Headed Gull with a very full hood similar to a Mediterranean Gull.
103 Curlew over Scout Road this morning, with 6 flocks of 39, 25, 14, 18, 4 and 2.
