It seems the birds had been chased off by a Sparrow Hawk just prior to my arrival. They returned in 2 flocks, counted together several times and kept making 74 or 75. Also kept dropping down onto shop roof.....probably to drink out of a puddle. Finally chased off by the 2 resident Mistle Thrushes. Think there are enough berries left for a couple of days if anyone fancies a look.

14 Waxwings @ North Place this afternoon (around 14.00)
Were only there briefly. All dropped in together in to the taller trees. 7 or 8 of them dropped into the bushes feeding on the berries for 3 or 4 minutes, then joined the rest of them at the top of the trees preening before flying west over Stockport town centre.
c12 Redwings present feeding on berries. As well as 1 female Sparrowhawk and 3 Goosander on the Mersey.

went to woodley precinct about 10ish with my wife. Small flock 0f 11 in the tree above the pub, dunno what its called , so we sat on a bench in the precinct and waited, only to be rewarded with another flock (did not count these) landing above us in the tree,, when they flewoff, we went to morrissons for a breakfast then got back about 11 .20 to see a flock of 54(we think), and a handful of birders , took a few pictures and went home

About 80 in Woodley precinct a quarter of an hour ago (perhaps one of the people there with a camera will be able to get a precise count?) until flushed first to a tree by the car park (west) by a couple of mistle thrushes and from there to a tree behind the precinct on the other side. Not many berries left though.

I too saw the Waxwing flock (45+ seen around 11am) at Woodley again today - there were quite a few people around with cameras and binoculars! Berries running a bit low but Morrison's down the road has a load of uneaten ones. I don't know whether the birds are ever seen down there too.
I know it's not really the place for off-site links but you just have to see these stunning closeup Waxwing photos taken on Fair Isle: http://fair-isle.blogspot.com/2010/11/waxwings-oct-25th-2010-day-well-always.html

After Simon Harris' post yesterday, from 11.30 today I took a walk up Drake Street, Rochdale in search of the Waxwings. No sign of them outside the CAB office, railway station, or Matalan car park - presumably they were just passing through.
So as not to waste my time, I crossed over Drake Street and went up to St Chads to look for the Peregrine at the Town Hall, guess what................no sign of that either.
Just 2 House Sparrows, and a Crow pecking at the stomach contents of one of Rochdales many intellectuals - one can only presume it was bought from one of the towns many high class take aways. DREAM ON!
