What was presumably the same skein that Ian Campbell noted over Elton at 16.20 could be seen from my Chadderton back garden heading SE/E at 16.31.
A very bit of rough and basic mathematics suggests that the distance between Elton Res and Chadderton as the goose flies is approximately 7 miles. 7 miles covered in 11 minutes equates to 38 mph or 61 km/h, depending on whether you prefer imperial or metric measures.
The distance to The Wash from Oldham (assuming that's where they are heading!), again as the goose flies, is approximately 120 miles and disregarding variables such as wind speed and direction, at a flying speed of 38 mph the journey would take approximately 3 hrs 10 minutes. So the birds would be coming into their roost around 19.40.
The flying speeds I have put forward are a bit faster than those suggested by Tim Wilcox on 29/10. Does 38mph seem too fast? I did manage to find some statistics on average flying speeds of PF Geese when I looked up this topic last year but I can't seem to remember where I found it now!
Thought this might be of interest although I certainly can't claim maths as one of my strongest subjects...in my school report for 1970 my mathematics teacher noted "If he would give his whole attention to work and try not to be so easily distracted, he would improve considerably". Things haven't changed much in 40+ years!
Cheers,
Bill.
PS - Have just managed to find a bit of info in Ian Newton's book "The Migration Ecology of Birds" on flight speeds of certain geese species on migration (White-fronted, Brent, and Barnacle) all recorded at around 70km/h. Roughly 44mph.

Friday's over Flixton took a few minutes to pass, as they were fairly well spaced-out and constantly making directional adjustments. They might have got themselves into 2 well-defined skeins by the airport.

Had to use an OS map and ruler due to the total USELESSNESS of Google maps to do it properly. It's just under a mile so 5 mins means they were moving at about 11mph. You would've imagined it might be faster but I could beat them on a bike. Perhaps not all the way to the Ouse Washes!
