Excellent movement of Wheatear this morning as expected and in line with other sites in the north-west. A total of 86 were recorded, with birds literally dropping out of the sky early morning and by 1pm they had all but passed through.

A female Ring Ouzel was feeding (or maybe sheltering!) along Georges Lane just east of the kennels at 8:35am this morning but then flew strongly north over the moor in a brief respite from the poor weather and no sign since. Also 3+ Wheatear and 4 + Raven in the area.

Highlight was a ringtail Hen Harrier that flew north-east over Smithills Moor at 11.50am, other sightings of note included:

The walks well worth it as that's the best chance for stonechat, red grouse amongst others

yes it's the Mast Road approach which you get to via George's Lane. The compound is the last but one on the left if you follow the road as far as you can go Good luck

Wilderswood and Higher Meadows: -
2 Crossbill flew north 11 (at least) Lesser Redpoll in and around the larches at the northern end of Wilderswood, showing very well. Female Brambling in the same larches as above (found by Andy Makin and Ken Haydock) 2 Siskin over
Winter Hill: -
Male (probably first summer, but veiws not great) Black Redstart was initially found at just after 9am by Andy Makin and Ken Haydock in the small mast compound off to the right (south) at the very end of Mast Road. Here it was seen to drop onto the stone wall there that is the county boundary and then was lost to view. 30 minutes later Ian and I heard and saw the bird singing from the main mast compound yard at the rear, on top of two wooden cable drums. Again, it dropped out of view and was not to be refound while we were there. Breeding plumaged Golden Plover flew over north. 1 Redpoll
Burnt Edge: -
Green Woodpecker calling in the area of Slack Hall. Single adult male Wheatear. 1 Siskin 2 Redpoll 1 Grey Heron flew over north

Around 7.0 this pm: Black Redstart seen flying across ''Snow Bunting compound'' at 6.50 pm Dave Sherrington, who was present, also saw it moving between the two adjacent compounds. At 7.20 glimpsed at the rear of the building in the last compound, before the bend, on the left as you walk back down. Also 2 pairs of Stonechat....1 pair by Scotsman's Stump and a pair close to the road further down in GM. Raven and Mallard over. Carrion Crow Meadow Pipit.

The walks well worth it as that's the best chance for stonechat, red grouse amongst others
you still have to park at the bottom and walk up as far as im aware there is no public access to the mast road via car and you have to park either at wilderswood car park or before the first cattle grid and gate,although many do seem to drive up.

yes it's the Mast Road approach which you get to via George's Lane. The compound is the last but one on the left if you follow the road as far as you can go

Wilderswood and Higher Meadows: -
2 Crossbill flew north
11 (at least) Lesser Redpoll in and around the larches at the northern end of Wilderswood, showing very well.
Female Brambling in the same larches as above (found by Andy Makin and Ken Haydock)

Winter Hill: -
Male (probably first summer, but veiws not great) Black Redstart was initially found at just after 9am by Andy Makin and Ken Haydock in the small mast compound off to the right (south) at the very end of Mast Road. Here it was seen to drop onto the stone wall there that is the county boundary and then was lost to view. 30 minutes later Ian and I heard and saw the bird singing from the main mast compound yard at the rear, on top of two wooden cable drums. Again, it dropped out of view and was not to be refound while we were there.
Breeding plumaged Golden Plover flew over north.

Black Redstart seen flying across ''Snow Bunting compound'' at 6.50 pm
Dave Sherrington, who was present, also saw it moving between the two adjacent compounds.
At 7.20 glimpsed at the rear of the building in the last compound, before the bend, on the left as you walk back down.
Also 2 pairs of Stonechat....1 pair by Scotsman's Stump and a pair close to the road further down in GM.
