This a.m. with Steven, a Jack Snipe circled the res. also 3 Little Egret, 2 Wigeon, 5 Shoveler, 5 Gadwall, 1 Pochard, 2 Goosander, 2 Little Grebe, 1 Kingfisher and 18 Teal. The hedgerows contained lots of Redwing with fewer Fieldfare and 15 Meadow Pipits near the pumphouse. Cheers Ian

An all dark (i.e. lacking white on the rump etc) swift species was around the pumphouse for 5 minutes at 10:35 this morning; no significant features noted to suggest anything more specific though.

A later start than what I wanted this morning, meaning my time around Elton was short.
Highlights include......
Usual ducks of....
Teal Gadwall Shoveler Goldeneye
And ....
Redwings Meadow pipit Common gulls
But the best was....
14 Whooper swans flying over. They tried to turn around back to the reservoir, perhaps to land on it? But that wind was battling against them and they at one point almost hovered. So they ended up turning back towards the direction they were originally going in and vanished! This would have been at 9:15am

True, whilst 53 species is most excellent for this time of year, don't forget I said "A quieter morning," one thing I didn't say was that it was quiet.
So that begs the question, how did this morning compare to yesterday morning. Here are a few examples.....
Yesterday I saw around hundreds of redwings in the shrubs and flying over, this morning I only had a good handful in various areas. Even the surrounding shrubs seemed quieter. Yet plenty of activity on the reservoir itself.

So in a nutshell, it maybe still busy there, but it all depends on your perspective.

A nice little potter about this morning,
Highlights include:

1730 Pinkfoot Geese flew west and 100 SE 7 Siskin south 7 Skylark south 550 Redwing SW 2 Water Rail along canal Gadwall on res
There was also a fight between 2 pairs of mute swans on the canal in which one pair attempt to drown the male of the other holding its head under water and with both birds then standing on top of it to push it under. They would have killed it and I couldnt just stand back and watch it happen so they both got shifted off with a prod of the scope leg!

Highlights of this mornings visit with Malcolm, 1 Tawny Owl being mobbed by Blackbirds in hedge near carpark, 1 Wigeon, 1 Pochard and 2 Goosander amongst the usual Ducks. 1 Snipe and 2 Water Rail at capsticks and 1 Peregrine over. The road from the hospital to the carpark is being resurfaced for 3 days from 21 Oct so apparently will not be usable at this time. Cheers Ian

There was also a fight between 2 pairs of mute swans on the canal in which one pair attempt to drown the male of the other holding its head under water and with both birds then standing on top of it to push it under. They would have killed it and I couldnt just stand back and watch it happen so they both got shifted off with a prod of the scope leg!
