No sign of any waxies on Shaftsbury avenue, but a nice flock of redwing. In the freezing cold cycled up to Sainsbury's where the 30 that were there were joined by two other flocks, making up a big flock of about 100. Feeding right above the recycling bins, either oblivious to me or not bothered by people. Still sitting in the poplars, but moving into the tree off site in someone's garden for a lot of the time.

The altrincham birds were around around at 4:30 and there were still well over 100, probably 200! Reasonable berry numbers, but with that flock size they won't last long, though they seem to be feeding off site as well so may be worth looking around.

Just returned from Sainsburys Altrincham where as an estimate there were 200 birds as we were leaving (15.30) - difficult to be more precise as they were flitting between the berry tree, the Poplars and off site. Made the weekly shopping trip much more enjoyable Great to see so many so close to home thanks Henry.

153 Waxwings in tall Poplar trees near Sainsbury's, Altrincham at 10.30am this morning. Acting very nervous, spending most of the time right at the top of the poplars but occasionally all coming down en masse to a couple of large Cotoneaster trees with plenty of berries left.
Also, a single Waxwing flew over Altrincham Sewage Works going north, but in the thick fog I couldn't see it at all!

No sign of the Ashton-u-Lyne Waxwings at 10.55 or midday.
I think I may have solved the mystery of where they are disappearing to though, as at 12.39 when I was walking back home, I heard the familiar trilling and saw 60-80 birds in the trees at the junction of Crescent Road and Wharf Street, Dukinfield, which flew off back in the direction of Ashton!
Hopefully they went back to the berries.

I managed to count 54 in Ashton-u-Lyne in the trees on Cotton Street car park up until 10am. They briefly left the site, but returned shortly after. As I left the site c40 birds flew over me towards Asda, there was no sign of them around Asda, but as there are very few berries anywhere in the area anyway, it is likely they returned to the site in Ashton.

Update on the Bolton Waxwings. The crompton way flock is now visiting Winchester way, Breightmet, on the corner by Red Lane school. Approx. 100 birds coming and going in small flocks to a rowan with plenty of berries on that my dad has been keeping an eye on. Birds there at 10.30am today some flew back towards Crompton way though.

After failing to connect on Trafford Park I headed home only to see a flock in a tree beside the M60. A quick detour onto Urmston Lane found around 50 or so around the junction with Scholfield Avenue where there are enough berries to keep them around for a couple of days.
They were very flighty though. I think this is my 4th or 5th self found Waxwing flock of the winter, showing I spend far too much time around suburbia and not enough time out in the field!
