I am fortunate enough to live very close to Elton, I've though being spending far less time going round for my rationed exercise in order to keep moving.
Ps. If it helps anyone, I've accumulated several pictures over the last two weeks that I'm hoping to post one on most days on my flickr page.

That's an amazing find & superb picture Richard - to me it looks like a cross between a Magpie & Jackdaw - maybe a Magdaw or Jackpie !!!
I'm afraid that hybridization isn't the reason why this Jackdaw has white patches on him Lez.
The partly white is more to do with a lack of pigment in the feathers, which is known as albinoism, also known as Leucistic. Sometimes you can find some birds completely white (pure albino) and other times (as in this case) there may be partly white or even just a few feathers. I've once found an almost completely white Black headed gull if it wasn't for a very faint grey tint to what should be black. Its legs and beak therefore stood out a mile as it was extremely bright red.
Hybrids are very rare and personally, I've never yet heard of a magpie x jackdaw and if this was the case, the lines between the black and white would be more clean lined and its shape would be a mix, perhaps a long tailed, slimmer shaped jackdaw with distinctive white chest and pure black head rather than this moth-eaten look in my picture.
Hope this helps and many thanks!

Sorry Richard I was merely trying to add a bit of humour to your excellent sighting & pic and not in any way suggesting hibridization - it was just a misguided and random comment based on the well defined black and white patches on the tail.

Hi Derek I notice that you say 55 species including: Sand Martin, Common Buzzard etc but you list only 34. I have noticed that you usually quote quite a big number then list considerably less. The species you do list are not particularly rare so why is it that you don't list all of the species seen or just stick to some of the less common ones? Perhaps I'm missing the point here so I hope you don't mind me asking. Regards Sid

Regards Sid
