Saturday 08 August 2009 morning Horrock's Flash:
1 Green Sandpiper Common Sandpiper (heard) 3 Snipe 1 male Sparrowhawk carrying prey.
Other things of interest were a Kingfisher @ Pearson's Flash and 2 Grey Wagtails over Rainford's tip.
I noticed quite a fee Coal Tits around this morning, also lots of warblers singing: Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Whitethroat and Reed Warbler.

Two female Tufties with 10 new ducklings variously divided between them, on the canal between Scotman's and Pearson's Flashes today. Brings the total number of Tuftie broods well into the 20s this year.

1 Whimbrel flew over low, heading south and calling. Nice 3 Green Sandpiper 3 Redshank (2ad, 1juv) 2 Little Ringed Plover (1ad, 1juv) 2 Snipe 1 Kingfisher then, while driving through Spring View on my way home there was a Sparrowhawk plucking it's prey on the pavement, with an audience of young girls screaming and crying as they watched!

Sunday 19 July 2009 late morning and mid-afternoon
horrocks flash first stop saw hundreds of lapwing, 3 tuffted duck famillies,3 great crested grebe,common terns,sedge warbler,reed bunting,swan with 6 cygnet on the canal. scotchmans flash had 12 greylags,great crested and little grebe,lots of coot and a few tuffties.Fairly quiet at the feeding station a few goldfinch,chaffinch,1 willow tit and in the area were several willow warblers and several blackcap. hawkley pool had lots of tufties and commonterns picking the dead fish off the canal hope they havent been poisoned . other birds of note were 1 kestrel ,a few grey heron and a good number of goldfinch, greenfinch,swift,house and sand martins. oh and lots of ring doveBig thanks to Pat for the new map book. Vernon you are now not needed as i can find my own way and sat navs are useless

Rather quiet tonight, the Greenshank is still present, as is at least 1 Green Sandpiper.

Whilst Rob and Jimmy did Horrocks, I did the rest...4 more broods of Tufties, a new brood of Pochard (at least the 5th) and a promising-looking Shoveler that might be on eggs from her behaviour.

1 Greenshank 3 Green Sandpiper 3 Dunlin 7 Redshank (including an annoyingly slim and odd looking juv which refuses to associate with the other redshank) 3 Snipe loads of plovers zipping around and hundreds of Lapwing (I'm going to have to do some kind of plover census this weekend) 1 Wigeon (drake) 1 Kingfisher and 2 Sparrowhawk flew over and put everything up.

Thursday 02 July 2009 Decided to have an early morning visit before work. My first early visit for ages, but it was well worth dragging myself out of bed for!
Horrock's Flash an adult Mediterranean Gull a Green Sandpiper heard only a female Cuckoo 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker
Bryn Marsh a Green Sandpiper flew in from the north and dropped down in to the marsh a Garden Warbler singing 1 Mistle Thrush over 1 Sparrowhawk
Rob, glad the sandpipers turned up,with another heatwave on the the cards it would be nice if some of the rangers could spend some time at horrocks,and maybe give them the bus fare to southport.

then had to dash back to work leaving the jobless folk to enjoy the 30'C weather with a refreshing swim and a 24 pack of Giro funded Fosters.

Horrocks flash 19.30 till rob came on for the late shift,
The colony is fine,if not dandy lots of activity and excitingly new arrivals ,i,ve decieded to wait untill the fat lady sings before i come to any conclusions about numbers etc. Suffice to to say a pleasant couple of hours spent in good company(not rob,s)

That could well be the case Henry. This probably has no relevance, but the last one I had was in the exact same place on 18 April, which I thought at the time was quite a late record. A late record and a very early record in the exact same spot... Maybe it never left?

1 Kingfisher 3 Teal (2m 1f) at least 60 Lapwing. Numbers of Swifts have reduced dramatically over the last week, they were just about into double figures tonight.
