A Raven was over Philips Park, Bradford mid-morning being chased by 2 Carrion Crows. There may well have been a second Raven too, from the calls being made but this went unseen. A Garden Warbler, plus several Blackcaps, were singing at nearby Clayton Vale later in the morning.

Willow warbler on walk to school this morning was a new urban record for me, but i suppose it was not that far as the bird flies from sites on river where they occur. Still would love it to have been on my garden list rather than somebody else's.

THREE GARDEN FIRSTS IN 5 MINUTES !!!!!! Attempting to turf my missus out of bed at 8am yesterday morning,I threw back the bedroom curtains, only to disturb a very large heron sat on the neighbour's shed ,eyeing-up our pond !!! Seconds after he flew off ,a loudly squawking jay landed in the pear tree..He flew off within about 10 seconds , only to be replaced on his perch by another similarly sized brown bird - another jay I thought at first glance!!! Closer inspection however , revealed it to be a beautiful female sparrowhawk !!! ( I really must make that Specsavers appointment ) By now , my missus had just about managed to get to the bedroom window ,just in time to witness the sparrowhawk launch a lightening strike on a unsuspecting feral pigeon that flew past !!! All within 10 feet of where we were stood ! I'm not sure if the sparrowhawk successfully caught her breakfast ,as raptor and quarry both disappeared around the gable-end of the house .Not bad for 5 mins in my dressing gown !!! Cheers Chris

Hi Jimmy,
Last summer I had several sightings throughout the breeding season of Grey Wagtails in the grounds of a hospital on the north side of the city. Again it was a good way from any brooks or streams. They were quite frequently around a tower structure which I presumed to be a water storage unit. Not really certain of its use though. I wasn't able to investigate any further without trespassing! But I would guess they may well have attempted to breed someone close by, if not actually somewhere in the structure itself? Just an educated guess really. Is there a similar type feature close by to where you saw these birds today?
Cheers,
Bill.
A few years ago (can`t remember which, but it is in the relevant County Report) there was a pair which built a nest in the boiler-house at Whelley Hospital, Wigan (since shut down). I used to have to wedge the door open for them so they could get in and out (how they first got in to prospect & build I don`t know !). The nearest water is the River Douglas at the bottom of Bottling Wood - a fair distance . Their comings and goings certainly brightened up the working day
Strangely enough, there is at least one pair which nest regularly at the hospital I currently work in (Wrightington Hospital, Lancs) ! I wonder what the attraction is for them at sites such as these ?
