Hi Bill,
It sounds like I heard the same birds coming off Holcombe Moor and heading to the north of Wayoh. They were too distant to count, with a restricted view also from my position on the reservoir, but the time and direction you saw them heading suggests these birds.

Wandering around Last Drop Village, Turton Golf Course, and Turton Tower this morning in visibility down to 20 yards I heard skein of geese flying over about 10.30am, heading NW over Egerton, but obviously too foggy to see. By this time the golf course had been shut, as the visibility was so bad.
At lunchtime I bumped into our golf course mole catcher, also the boss of the greenkeepers, and we had a good discussion regarding the course wildlife. Another skein of geese could be heard and we presumed they would be carrying on NW. After leaving Andy at the clubhouse I had a chat with one of the farmworkers at Holts Fold Farm. He said a couple of strange brown ducks had flown into the field by the golf course. I presumed they would be just Mallards. But I could still hear geese and they seemed to be getting closer.
With visibility still down to 20 metres I set off for a lunchtime pint, but then the noise got closer, and I saw geese very low dropping down. Further investigation was needed. A detour across to the Last Drop revealed two geese in the field to my right which must have been the two "brown ducks" , in Lancashire. They flew off when I got too close. To my left was a very noisy skein of 52 birds which had actually landed in the field by Haydock House, in Greater Manchester. The footpath is the county boundary. The skein flew off after about 5 minutes but I could still hear them calling in flight for another 5 minutes or so around the golf course.
It just shows how luck can play a part in birding. If I had not met Andy I would not have gone back that way, and if I had not turned down a lift home from a neighbour (the one who saw Waxwings last year on the course), and had not spent time at the farm yapping away, I would have missed these cracking birds.
