It´s perhaps a forlorn hope that the Black-throated Diver will still be present on 11th when we return from Madrid but any updates as we reach the end of next week (should it still be here) would be greatly appreciated please. Ironically it turned up the very day after we flew out on 24th Dec....
Best Wishes for 2014 to all.

Glad you all braved the weather to see the Black Throated Diver. It can be ok weather in and around Denton and Audenshaw but once you get up there it's like Arctic conditions with piercing winds and freezing cold temperatures.
I take it nobody managed to sight the Yellow Legged Gulls? I thought I had them yesterday and after a photo review I think it could be, but no-one has posted them since last Friday so I'm unsure if they've moved on and I've misidentified them. Cheers Rob

Late post due to the best birder I know (Dad) taking a turn for the worse but I'm sure he will want me to post this.
Black Throated Diver was still present and showing well at 12.50pm when I left, although a little earlier it had disappeared in the increasing Gull crowd and reappeared on the other side of No.1
Other birds of note... Cormorant Goosander Tufted Duck Goldeneye Meadow Pipit Pied Wagtail Great Crested Grebe 110 Pink Footed Geese (counted by another birder present) Gulls...Black Headed Common Lesser Black Backed Great Black Backed Herring Gull ...also of note were 2 Gulls in the group that I thought could have been the 2 Adult Yellow Legged myself and Gary C had last week, another birder thought they could be Argentatus, and to be honest the photos are inconclusive and we were just not that confident on this ID so could well have been Herring Gulls.

Quick visit to Alaska this afternoon approx 3.30pm. Bad weather and poor light, nice to meet Gary Crowder again, and thanks for the scope views.
Watching an adult Yellow Legged Gull drifting on No.1 amongst thousands of Gulls when a 2nd adult just casually drifted into view within feet of each other, I promptly handed the scope view back to GC for confirmation.
Gull roost on No.1- Yellow Legged Gull - 2 adults Black Headed Gull - both estimated 8000 - 10,000 Great Black Backed Gull - maybe 30+ Lesser Black Backed Gull - approx 50+
Common Gull - away from the other Gulls, on far side of No.1, unable to give a figure as light had all but diminished when I got over there, very high number, hundreds maybe over 1000.
No other birds positively ID'd except Carrion Crows and Canada Geese due to fading light and choppy waves so putting it down to 'usuals'. The Gull numbers are only an estimate, impossible to count as this roost is forever increasing by the second, even more groups of Gulls were coming in overhead in a constant wave as I left the site.
A word of caution, United Utilities appear to be stepping up their permit only policy as new railings have gone up both on the perimeter and on the main site. Cheers Rob

Possibly same group of large Gulls present again yesterday afternoon, Monday too, at side of M60 on outer banking of Res 3 that I saw other day. Appears to be 1 maybe 2 Great Black Backed Gulls present but as to the rest it's difficult to tell when driving passed in a 7.5 tonner. There is one in particular present with the group though that I would ask for help with, appears to be a juvenile of some age due to the plumage, although a little on the pale side if anything with respect to the dark areas of juv plumage, and it is very large, it appears big even at the side of the Great Black Backed. If anyone is up there mid afternoon, this group is present quite often, in same place, and this bird will stand out so not hard to find. Is it just a Herring Gull? Any comments appreciated. Cheers Rob
