I've checked the car and rucksack, it's not there - it was feeding very close in and spent a good 15 minutes out of sight behind the reeds on the near shore, the angle being so tight you couldn't see the shore from the edge of the hawthorn's and wasn't going nearer in case it flushed - it was only when it ran back towards the anglers that it came back into view

First trip to the lodge for some time, nice to meet Jon Bowen, Chris and John (sorry I didn't get your last names). Saw good views of the little stint (lifer ) thanks to 2 chaps from St Helens (sorry I didn't get your names). Pity the battery in my camera died. Other bitds of note included 5 whimbrel, 3 or 4 sedge warblers, 3 whitethroats, a good number of swifts, a couple of swallows, 2 or 3 common terns (one was ringed white on left leg, yellow on right leg), a couple of great crested grebes and 2 grey herons. A great morning's birding, thanks to all who helped me improve my id skills.

Apologies for the late reply. My comments that the bird seen on the 10th looking different were based on 'both' birds being viewed in the same area of the lodge and the second bird looking smaller compared to nearby Redshank and Plover/ Lapwings than I remember the 1st bird ( as per Keith's comments above) but more down to the first bird seen having more defined mottling on it's back and the leg colour being less obvious. Not definitive, hence my question, but the first bird really stood out for me whereas this second bird didn't. Again not certain, just putting it out there

Hi Keith, I left home (in Durham) at 1.50 this morning in a bid to finally nail my commonest Greater Manchester bogey bird - Turnstone at Pennington, which with considerable relief I had in my 'scope at 5.55 am! Despite the windy conditions I was then able to relax and enjoy a breeze around some of Manchester's prime sites. After the carvery lunch at the nearby Royal Oak, I thought Rumworth would be worth a look, especially with Wood Sandpiper as a possibility. It proved to be a good move (I got there about 12.45), with quite a pleasing wader selection and only the second Wood Sandpiper ever for me in Greater Manchester (my last was in the mid 80's on Adswood Tip, Stockport). I then noted another Turnstone (a site "tick" for me at Rumworth) so 'phoned it through to John (Rayner) as I suspected it might be of interest to others, and am pleased indeed that several of you managed to nail another G M lifer.
Turnstone seems to be one of those transient species along with Kittiwake and Sandwich Tern which tend to pass through Manchester sites rather speedily, and can be quite hard to catch up with in G.M. (You can perhaps imagine how difficult these three are for me living here, as my minimum travelling time is 2 hours 20 mins just to get down).
These three birds are of course very common on the N E coast so my friends up here consider me to be a bit odd, going to Manchester just to add to my G M list, but at my age I think I'm allowed a few eccentricities.
I'm interested that Jon Bowen (who found the earlier bird) considers it a different one.
Good Birding!
Regards, Mike P.
