Noticed about 10 Mistle Thrush around the Mill Lane Area of Denton yesterday and 2 Sparrowhawks - 1 male and 1 female. The MT's appeared to be roving about.
At the same location today I noticed a Raven soaring and kronking not too high at first but moving upwards and northwest-ish in the direction of Oldham. It was about 4.45pm. It was soaring so grandly it could have easily been mistaken for a Buzzard or other BOP.
Later on plenty of Gulls prob Common Gulls heading to Audenshaw reservoir I presume.

I live in a very unpromising location for birds - a Chorlton first-floor flat, overlooking the flat roof of the pub next door. However, last winter, I was delighted when a grey wagtail took up residence, presumably finding bugs to eat in the little puddles that collect on the flat roof.
Over the last week, I've been hearing some fairly determined chip-chipping and was sure it must be the wag. Came home from work this afternoon to disturb one in my alleyway, which then flew up in the direction of my flat, to join its partner! Absolutely delighted.

A Nuthatch was in my garden in Cheadle Hulme this evening. Initially it was flitting around the fence and giving it a peck and then for the next ten minutes was feeding from my peanut feeder and flying off to a neighbours tree to eat. I've never seen a Nuthatch in my garden before and it was quite a pleasant surprise. I am not really that close to woodland or farmland. I hope it comes back though, the photo I got of it was too dark.

Yes. My house backs onto Bagslate Quarry in Norden, so immediately behind my house there is a nice area of mixed woodland. I can hear Jays screaching in the wood all day long. I know Jays can be quite elusive, but occassionally they will come to my nut hangers

Hi Marvin,
Definitely plenty of them about. Probably two factors come into play - firstly its the end of the breeding season when hopefully the population should be at its highest and secondly its acorn time! - Jays are very active at this time of the year collecting and hiding away acorns as a food store for the winter months.
Found this interesting info on a study of Jays at this time of year which might be of interest - "In one year in south-east England, caching began in 1st week of September, increasing to peak in mid-October when c. 40 birds taking part at one site, probably whole local population as no birds observed in usual locations elsewhere; last seen transporting acorns in mid-November when apparently none left on trees. Activity occupied c. 10 hr per day at peak intensity, when average time to collect, carry, and store acorn load was c. 10 min, with average 1·2 km to cache; each bird stored c. 5000 acorns during autumn."
Cheers,
Bill.

Not 10 minutes ago, whilst putting some seed out onto my birdtables I was aghast to see a female Goshawk fly at a height of only 60 feet or so over my house in Astley and slowly circle the field behind my garden long enough for me to grab my bins and soak up the beast. It all to quickly moved off towards Marsland Green before it dawned on me that I had earlier this year seen a falconer in that very area walking along Manchester Road with one on his arm Despite decent views (if a little silhouetted at times) I couldn't make out any jessies though.
