Grey Heron - 1 building quite a substantial platform on the west island. Pochard - 131 Tufted Duck - 17 Scaup - 1w drk Teal - 1 2 hybrid aythyas: 1 Pochard x Ferruginous & 1 possible (Pochard x Ferruginous) x Pochard, ie a backcross, whatever that means. Maybe it's even a backcross of a backcross, and I've absolutely no idea what that means! It might even have a bit of Scaup in it.
It looks almost like a female Pochard but is darker backed, dull brownish/grey breast, slightly smaller than Pochard, very dark undertail coverts, very obvious large white spot on lores, very strong eye-ring and line running off rear of eye, and head is quite small with a gentle concave forehead slope (similar to Pochard) and quite a flat crown with the peak quite a bit behind the eye. The bill looks quite big and awkward, as if someone has just glued it to poor thing's face, but the pattern is just like a female Pochard with a thin narrow pale blue sub-terminal band.

Finally seen the Scaup - asleep with the Pochard under the trees. 10+ Goosander and similar number of Goldeneye. 100+ BH Gulls and a couple of Common Gulls.

At midday today there was only 1 drake Wigeon left (or two had gone into hiding), however Goldeneye had gone up to 11. Also 2 Little Grebe, 50 Common Gull, 6 Redwing, Kestrel on Barlow Tip and a 'flock' of 4 Bullfinch.
In addition to the birds reported in various messages, I saw a female Green Woodpecker on the 'old tip' on Tuesday pm. Having got extremely wet on Tuesday am. So wet I had to go home and dry out. Apologise for this late report.

Mute Swan - 9 (2 juvs) Goosander - 19 (possibly even 21 with a pair on the river, but these could have jumped ship after I counted the ones on the lake) Goldeneye - 10 Pochard - 69 Tufted Duck - 58 Cormorant - 3 Skylark - 1 flushed off Barlow Tip
Tony, the Scaup is practically always been loafing with the Tufties either infront of or between the south and south-west compounds, showing well in the mornings. Only once it arrived late, about 09.30 with a flock of Pochard. It does get close under trees in windy conditions and I've also seen it under the branches of the west island among Pochard in the afternoon.
good luck
