Just took mum for a pint sat outside The Windmill. A group of Starlings have flown over alarm calling, the reason being an adult Peregrine was following closely. It banked low over the pub and headed in same direction.

- Common Swifts Good to see some back in Dane Bank over the last week or so around Hulme Rd, Windsor Rd, and Anson Rd area but only around 6 birds I might add which is very low.
- Coal Tit Currently on one of the bird table nut feeders in the garden. Presumably same one that's been hanging around for a couple of weeks now.

Thursday 1st March
- 7 Common Snipe only 500yds away from the Windmill Pub in Dane Bank.
They were reported on one of our local Facebook pages, Dane Bank Green Space. They were in one of the fields that makes up part of the area earmarked for developing on along with West End Cricket Club, West End Boys FC, Dane Bank Riding Club and Stables, and the Angling / Fishing Club. According to some of the residents they've been seen here before.
- 2 Goldcrest in the front garden around 7am this morning. They were present for a good while as I could hear them still calling roughly an hour later.

7.30pm... Just bringing Mum back from shopping, driving up Windmill Lane near the Dane Bank Pub and a HOBBY has gone steaming over us towards the M60 / Denton roundabout.
Just had a quick scoot round to see if I could re-spot it, no luck but there quite a few Swifts around especially towards the roundabout and Audy Res so it could've been heading up that way.
1st one I've ever seen in our area, I'm really surprised!

Not seen them do this for ages but they have done it in the past when nextdoor neighbour scared 1 away a few years back from his back garden pond....when his Coy Carp started disappearing!
Rob,
I saw those herons from the central well at Audenshaw and thought it a bit odd to see three flying together at this time of year. Must have had a strategy sorted out for cleaning up the pond!!

Probable LITTLE GULL flying over Hulme Road towards the M60 roundabout at Audenshaw Reservoirs last evening around 6pm. (Didn't post last night, I was distracted as iphone took longer than expected to download IOS 8)
It was very small, quick flying, quite dark underwings giving the impression of a standout white body. I didn't have camera to hand so I can't provide evidence and is only a positive sighting (in my view) based on the features seen on the bird as a flyover.
Any comments welcome

Could well be Tim as we're virtually only 500yds away from the M60. They learn pretty quickly where the best bird tables and feeding stations are as it becomes a bit of a feeding station for the Sparrowhawk too.
Not a sighting, more of a hearing...last night walking to the pub to watch United and I heard high pitch short shrills above, pretty sure they were Redwing.

Well Rob, perhaps it was 'your sparrowhawk' which had nipped over the M60 to visit us. I do see them flapping and gliding in the skies around Denton but not usually so close up.

Hi Tim, I don't know about "not a common sight". Our Sparrowhawk in the Hulme Road area is quite regular, maybe 2, 3 times a week, either around the bird table and feeders, or a garden flyover, and many a time I've been driving locally and I've seen them dash from one side of the road to the other between the gaps in the Semi's. Cheers Rob

After a slow start to the Autumn season, the garden feeders have been busy with tits, finches and the welcome mob of local house sparrows. Refilling the feeders - and shooing off the neighbours' hearth rug of a moggy - usually sees an increase in activity. But today not an LBJ in sight. It was only as I looked through the kitchen window across the washing-up bowl that I saw the cause: a fat sparrowhawk perched atop the hawthorn just beyond the garden fence. Not a common sight in Denton.

There has been a small urban rookery at Denton for a number of years - never more than 4 nests and only appeared to be 2 active last year when I passed on the bus. The rookery is just down the road from the old black & white church (St Lawrence's?). Hopefully I will pass the site again before all the leaves are out on the tree that they nest in - if I do I'll post it in the Rookery thread.
