I've just moved from Westleigh to Higher Fold so I'll try and keep this thread updated as much as possible.
I have to say I'm really looking forward to mooching around this area, especially in spring and summer. I know Colliers Wood is owned by the forestry commission, is there any available maps for the area??

Basically, I saw a Lesser-Spotted Woodpecker in the woods at Gin-Pit village in Astley, Tyldesley. I was told by a local resident that there are two of these birds in the area but I only saw the one.
I wanted to take a picture as it flew overhead and landed about 20 feet away in a bare tree, but I could'nt get my cameraphone out quick enough.

Recent sightings in the past few weeks in this area have included Grasshopper Warblers in three locations (including a reeling bird next to Tyldesley RUFC yesterday) and Reed Warbler in the smallest stand of reeds (in a pretty dry field!) imaginable.
On the 12th July, Andy Isherwood had a family party of Willow Tits which included 3 juveniles by Gin Pit village.
