10.30 - 11.00 & 13.15 - 13.50 today:24/1/13 Map Ref 109/708899 & 708902 Warburton. Difficult to accurately assess numbers as they are constantly moving about, but there is well in excess of 1000 distributed in both ploughed and unploughed fields to the west of the A6144 between Heathlands Farm and Jack Hey Gate Farm, Warburton. They are much easier to see when in the green field just to the south of Jack Hey Farm (first OS ref above). There it is possible to carefully pull off the road into a field entrance (at the corner with a chevron board) to view from a car. But they frequently move back and forth in small numbers at a time into the adjacent ploughed up potato field (second OS ref) where they are better camouflaged!
Many thanks all those who first mentioned this location, which has given me & my wife our best view ever of Pink Foots on the ground.

The geese were still on the harvested potato field at Warburton Lane near Partington from 5pm-5:30pm this evening. Around 200 visible close to the road, poor light made it difficult to see any more.

I suspect a count of c700 grounded Pink-footed Geese may well constitue a record high count for GM for this species of geese down on the ground. They must be a great sight! I think the previous highest was of 530 on stubble fields at Barton Moss on 15th November 2011. Todays sightings are certainly worth a prominent mention in the 2014 GM County Bird Report....but like all of the other great records posted on this forum they will only be included in the report if records are sent in by observers of the relevant sightings.
Cheers,
Bill.

I went to see the field mentioned on posts below which was said to have a good number of pinkfeet on it most of this week, just outside Partington when going towards Lymm. I got there at about 11:45am, and sure enough there was a large number of them covering parts of the field (potato stubble), roughly 300 at least from what I could see. They all seemed very relaxed which is good, and I think it helps not having a particulary busy pavement or stopping area near by which could spook them if people go past, as they can only be viewed as you drive past the field. Great to see them in this area where they do not land very often but are seen quite regularly flying over, now I am working on finding out the roosting site which must be local.

Most mornings between 0800 - 0830 this week, there has been small flocks every day, now this morning the field was full of them, unfortunately i am driving so hard to count, but would think its into the Hundreds....
