After almost boasting that my luck was out this week and I wouldn't get to see any whimbrels or yellow wagtails this afternoon, just as I got to the path into Mosslands Farm there was a single whimbrel in the middle of the barley field. Looking back for one last scan of the reserve I found a Channel wagtail feeding on one of the bunds.
I should have said I wouldn't see a hobby either!

Dave Stewart and I weren't expecting to see much of interest whilst recording the "habitats" (turf and silage fields) along Moss Road (SJ6994) for the Carbon Landscape Breeding Farmland Birds Survey. However, a silent flock of waders flew in low from the SW at 11:25 hrs and appeared to drop down into Field no. 66. So we abandoned the survey and walk back north along Moss Road and relocated the flock.
An incredible 22 Whimbrels were feeding on a turf field, and as we stood on the road walked towards us approaching to within c.75m. We must have watched the flock for about 20 minutes before a microlight flushed them and they flew off NW at approx. 11:50 hrs.
The largest flock in the GMBRG database since 35 flew NE over Heald Green on 18th April 1987 and would appear to be the highest number ever recorded "down" in the county in modern times. Unless anyone knows differently?
Other birds recorded in the 1-km square: Kestrel - 1 male Willow Warbler - 6 singing Blackcap - 1 singing Whitethroat - 4 singing. Incredible how these warblers have managed to set up territory in the small patches of remaining semi-natural habitat. Dunnock - 3 singing Yellowhammer - 1 singing
