A nice little garden tick for me this morning at 8. 00. 2 calling greenshanks flying over from the bradley fold fisheries area, starmount, only a couple of miles from elton where bird's were also heard recently.

A solitary (seemingly breeding plumaged adult) Black-tailed Godwit was a surprise flying rather low due west (directly for Hope Carr/Pennington) over my garden in Astley at approximately 2:40ish today.

10.35 am buzzard over junction 3 of m60 cheadle turnoff, quite a small bird.
11,50 am buzzard over m60 by reddish vale much larger bird than the one seen earlier

7.30 - 13.00
Young begging Tawny Owl heard and then seen, Willow Warblers carrying food in 2 different locations, Stock Doves with a juvenile, 2 pairs of breeding Pied Wagtails, Jackdaws with young, two Rooks with a single fledged juvenile, family party of 2 adults and at least 4 juvenile Coal Tits, 2 family parties of Long-tailed Tits, a family party of Goldfinch. Pair of Bullfinches, Skylarks singing, young Wrens, Dunnocks, Blackbirds, Great Tits, Blue Tits and Robins. A few Swifts but no House Martins.
Many thanks to the lovely lady from the house on the hills to the north-west of Tottington who showed me all the nest sites she had located and kept an eye on (and enjoyed watching!) around her house and garden - Swallows with young in the nest in the garage at present, nest sites where Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Blackbird and Wren had either bred this or last year.

26th May - am.
Boothstown area.
Pair of Willow Tits feeding 3 fledged young, pair of Chiffchaff feeding 5 young well hidden away amongst some brambles. Not sure if the young could even fly yet. Sedge Warbler, Linnet, Reed Bunting, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat and Blackcap also in evidence.
Also in general area - a Magpie raiding a Greenfinch nest in leylandii. A pair of Goldfinches have a nest in ivy nearby - not sure if that will survive the attentions of the Magpie.

Got a great spotted woodpecker interested in my nest box in the shawclough area. Keeps popping its head into box. Today it tried getting in,it would eat the chicks wouldnt it? Dont want to disturb box but very frustrating. The animal kingdom is hard at times.

Possible Red Kite heading west on the ship canal over Centenary Way bridge at 9:10 this morning. I managed to stop and have a peek with my boot bins but being rubbish bins I still only got the silhouette. If it were a Red Kite, it does seem an unusual location to see one!

A Blue Tit ripping the nap(?) off a tennis ball my granddaughter left out on the lawn. Oddly enough it selected the pink nap rather than the yellow from the two coloured ball. Perhaps it was a female Blue Tit?? Rick.

saw a goosander drake flying around cross lane, radcliffe about 4pm yesterday and 2 lapwings too
another drake seen today at 2pm, once again circling around, presumably same one as yesterday
chiffchaff heard in scrub at 1.15pm between pilsworth the road that leads to manchester road, bury today
also chiffchaff heard about 4.40pm near riverside road 4.30pm today too

I was in my study this morning and heard a lot of alarm calling outside. Looked out and there was a male Sparrowhawk sitting on my kitchen roof (Great Lever, Bolton) plucking something. Got a few decent pics.

Last year a pair of Swifts nested under the eaves of my neighbours house opposite my own in Swinton. I've just noticed a Swift visit the same spot and it was quickly chased off by a Starling who looks like that he has already taken up residence.

Yesterday (8/5) in Bolton - the first young Starlings out of the nest seen this year. Welcomed into the big bad world by the close unwelcome attention of some Magpies and Crows.
Also in the same area the first fledged Long-tailed Tits of the year. A similar date to sightings of the first fledged young of this species for the last two years - 11/5/10 and 9/5/09.

As I was driving out of the Trafford centre at 2.45pm this afternoon after following the wife around shopping for 4 hours a Peregrine shot passed at about 10m high heading for the Ski centre.

I too just saw my first Swifts of the year, two arcing, screeching and flapping over my Northenden back yard. I don't associate them with downpours, but nevertheless, a welcome sight.

Ian, I think its Great Lever, Bolton. I visited this morning early doors and walked up and down for half an hour between the two road bridges without hearing anything that resembled a Wood Warbler unfortunately.
