I am very sorry to have to announce that the Fulmar has not made it and died in the night
I will make arrangement to take it to the museum to be with Mr Auk.
keep birding the live ones.

The Fulmar was found and identified independently by my colleague Dave Harrison (nice one Dave ) who was working the morning shift and woke me up at 10.06 with the text message Fulmar CWP (I'm working the late shift 13.15-21.15 this weekend). So I dragged myself out of bed, rang him - he was still watching it as it sat on the water and said it looked knackered. I then relayed the news to Mr McKercher and I arrived on site at 10.50, saw it straight away and rang him back.
By 15.00 I was becoming increasingly concerned for the birds welfare, as it was struggling to paddle against the strong wind and was pushed to the edge, therefore being more vulnerable to dog attack. I called MR RSPCA Heaton, went and grabbed my waders and a landing net and rescued the bird without it putting up any struggle or throwing up over me and handed it over to Paul Heaton.
Fishermen report it being present from 18.00 yesterday, though no news was related to the wardens yesterday and only one claimed to actually know the birds identity.
Hope it survives the night and a successful release.
Odd all these strangers around and everybody knows me

The Fulmar is apparently not looking well at all currently (2:30pm) and may imminently be taken into care, one little white van is racing back there (straight from drinking all my tea) and the bird, if taken into care, may still be viewable for the next half hour or so.

Came across it today on opposite side of Mersey from Broad Ees Dole, never noticed it before, think mainly because nothing seems to happen when i am about. Although this morning there must have been between 20-30 Grey Herons in the area..
How can we get to it, tried at the VC on Sale, but was shut when we left..

redhead SMEW present 09.05 - 15.30 at least. Habits changed during the course of the day. Associating with Goldeneye first thing, very flighty, twice flew a couple of laps around the lake and once flew onto the adjacent River Mersey but only for 5-10 minutes before returning. Then broke away from the Goldeneye and fished in the shallows at the waters edge deeply hidden under branches (Little Grebe style). From midday it spent the entire afternoon roosting with Goldeneye in the middle of the lake. Probably an immature male as it was seen displaying a few times, throwing its head forwards (unlike Goldeneye). I've not seen them yet, but Paul Heaton and Rob Smallwood managed some record shots. The Tatton bird has not yet been reported on Birguides today so far.

Thanks to Judith Smith's excellent images of the bird now on the galleries of the website plus detailed study in the hand (or should that be in the conservatory ) and input from Rob Adderley, the Chorlton Fulmar is clearly an immature, although perhaps only just!
The wing coverts of the bird are a mixture of old and very worn juvenile browner feathers and fresh greyer adult ones, plus the primaries are (besides being slightly brownish) very pointed at the tips whereas adults have more rounded tips. Both these features are clearly visible in the images.
Juvenile Fulmars begin a complete post-juvenile moult in May of the 2nd Calender year and complete it by September so the Chorlton bird is likely to have been born last year since it has a majority of adult plumage with just retained wing coverts and remiges. (Info BTO Guide 24)
