I dashed off in search of these this lunchtime and walked from Asda car park to Alex Park duck pond and back, looking at every likely tree, and lots of unlikely ones too. I was about to give up, when on close inspection, what I at first thought was yet another flock of starlings turned out to be 26 waxwings in the trees in front of Moss Side Fire Station, just south of Asda. A lifetime first for me! Cheers!
Glad you connected!

Millions of thanks for this - headed to Ordsall Park and saw a flock of about 30-40 at 3pm! We got really lucky - a couple of minutes after we arrived they got scared off by a bird of prey... Been wanting to see these for years :)
RECOUNT - managed to get a couple of shots of them, and having counted them there were well over 100 in the tree!

Interesting you should say 'not many berries' I reccied here on Sunday and there were plenty so they must have laid waste to them quite quickly - or the Starlings which were having a go when I went
I actually meant in the car park of Tesco where they were feeding. There were very few to sustain these birds for any length of time and there may well have been other food sources not far away.
Yes I meant actually in the Tesco car park too

30 or so possibles over Hale today, heading in the general direction of Hale Village. Definitely either Waxwing or Starling, looking at how they were flying though and given the numbers in the county (and the fact i've never had Starling here before) might suggest the former.

Everyone, could we please keep this thread more related to actual sightings of Waxwings. Other forms of discussion (as interesting as they are and relative as they may seem) may be better placed on the Waxwing thread on the discussion forum. Pointing out every potential Waxwing attracting crop of berries in the county could run and run when really this thread is for pointing out when you actually get lucky and find them on it

Funny how they'll eat berries that the thrushes don't like, like the ornamental Sorbus you mention, pale coloured pyracantha etc. Guess they don't have other sources of food. I'd be very interested to know what the fat scores were for the birds which have been caught and ringed, eg in Orkney i think a couple of weeks ago.

Yep. It's interesting to see what their preferences are. Their favourite is definitely Rowan, after that i've not had enough time with Waxwings to know what their 2nd and 3rd choices are. I've got a feeling they're not particularly fond of that profusely berrying tree which grows along the flats down the side road to Sainsburys entrance - it's the same species as all along that road into Warrington which we discussed last winter, and which seems to get left by all species inc thrushes til last! You've seen them on that big cotoneaster tree species i think? Eg the ones opposite Christ Church Timperley at the end of Ridgeway Road last year? Then there's pyracantha, which does get taken i believe.
