Highlights this morning before the big bad storm!
Teal Shoveler Goldeneye m+f Scaup (apparently an immature drake, the pictures show the classic grey stripy feathers just coming through. Its possible it may have been part of a late brood - which would explain why it is still largely in its juvenile plumage.) Originally found by Steven and Ian.
Common gull Buzzard (cracking views getting mobbed by crows) Meadow pipits Grey wagtail Little egret Redwing Fieldfare
No sign of the Godwit so far this morning by anyone.

Generally dry and certainly not as wet as it was on the journey from Middleton.
Couldn't find the Bar-tailed Godwit at Capsticks or wader point or flooded fields.

Something strange happened this morning, the sky started showing patches of blue, and it stayed dry!!!!

Boy, I must have been crazy to go out this morning in heavy rain.....
Highlights include:
Teal Shoveler Little egret x2 Grey wagtail Meadow pipit Bar tailed godwit flew in to his usual spot when the showers briefly eased Treecreeper was heard from the trees/shrubs next to the sailing club and overflow
The redwings seemed to be enjoying the wet conditions as it was as if they weren't already wet enough, they dived in a puddle with the blackbirds to have a bath!!!! (I had a canary once that was like that - always loved getting wetter than wet at bath time)
I cut short my rounds due to the extreme weather.

1:30pm to 4:30pm - Primarily to see the Bar Tailed Godwit.
After hour & half wait at the southern end of Elton in the horse field behind Capsticks, it finally showed itself for 5 minutes after it had been flushed by a fox just before I arrived.
I relocated it again at 4:15pm for a further 2 minutes before 2 idiots on scrambler bikes blasted through with the obvious result.
Also of note :- Kestrels, Buzzard, plenty of Great Crested Grebes, Teal, Bullfinches, Long Tailed Tits, Jays, Grey Wagtail on Withins outflow, 100s of Redwing moving through trees & hedges near redstart hedge with a lone Fieldfare mixed in amongst them.
Bar tailed godwit at Capsticks in the field with pool and horses. GM tick for me. Has given me the run around.

Quick walk from the Radcliffe side along the Canal, sourth side of the Reservoir and Withins: No sign of the Bar-tailed Godwit and very quiet on the main Reservoir. Birds Noted included

I'm aware they're not seen often at all round here. I am normally very cautious about posting rarities like this when no one else was there to verify, but I am very familiar with Marsh Tit calls/songs as I have spent the summer living in a woodland in Warwickshire where they are almost as common a sight as blue tits, so I recognised it as soon as I heard it. Managed to spy the bird through my binos for a brief glimpse before it went off away from the car park towards the direction of the cycle track. I only saw and heard one individual.

Quick walk from the Radcliffe side along the Canal, sourth side of the Reservoir and Withins: No sign of the Bar-tailed Godwit and very quiet on the main Reservoir. Birds Noted included
- 5 Teal - marsh near the canal
- 1 Shoveler (male)
- 5 Goldeneye (1m and 4 fem/juv)
- 12+ Great Crested Grebe
- 3+ Grey Wagtail
- a flock of 6+ Greenfinch
- a few calling Redwing heard
- Kestrel
- Pheasant (m)

I'm aware they're not seen often at all round here. I am normally very cautious about posting rarities like this when no one else was there to verify, but I am very familiar with Marsh Tit calls/songs as I have spent the summer living in a woodland in Warwickshire where they are almost as common a sight as blue tits, so I recognised it as soon as I heard it. Managed to spy the bird through my binos for a brief glimpse before it went off away from the car park towards the direction of the cycle track. I only saw and heard one individual.
Also pretty rare encounter this morning, marsh tit singing/calling from trees at back of car park, 10:30am, confirmed visually.
